Also had a question- What could I do at Amherst in terms of meteorology (a passion of mine)? I assume that I could take some classes at UMASS…

Be hopeful, you've got a lot going on for you. If your SATs are around 2200, you'll have a very good shot, especially ED. Although you might consider removing that "will not apply for financial aid" bit. Believe me, I've been there, and Amherst is the last college in the USA that considers financial circumstances. Trust me.

I think that you know whether or not to check off the FA box, especially since brother graduated in '07. And, just like any school, although Amherst is wonderful with its FA, it also likes students who don't need it. Can't hurt.

NO chance...I'm sorry but you're too much of a scrub to get in

You have a good chance but nobody can really tell you because the admission to Amhers is very tough for everyone!

If you really like Amhesrt, just apply! Good luck!

About half of legacies are offered admission. Applying ED is a great idea. You have a great chance.

Vote to defer to RD. If only because of that appalling "docile" typo. =)

You have a very good chance esp. with all that legacy stuff. Elite colleges like that.

Thanks Jason...

btw- I upped my SAT to 2250 on the June test.
690 CR
790 M
770 W

Excellent! Now you have a very competitive SAT score, so don't worry about the SATs anymore, if you're destined to get admission, these scores will be sufficient. Work hard on those essays, with your legacy and ECAs you should get in. But the essays are most important, I have the recent experience of getting in exclusively based on my essays. As an int'l, I had literally no ECA and no academic distinctions, but got in entirely based on essays, the admission dean informed me that.

"About half of legacies are offered admission"

One footnote. With legacies you get a pre-screening so that feelings are not hurt. If your stats are not at roughly median levels they will tell you not to apply. It is not that big a category.

"JOHN MERROW: It also helps to be a legacy. This year, 3 percent of the applicants had close relatives who graduated from Amherst."

JOHN MERROW: In the end, Amherst accepted half the legacies. That's 6 percent of next year's freshman class.

Your new stats do seem to be at the required levels for legacy to provide a bump. Good luck.
