General Comments:

The main question is can i get into Cornell ED? and which program out of CALS , CAS, and Engineering is the easiest to get into? I really like the engineering program and will re-visit soon, and counselor told me that i should even write a letter to them describing my passion and how i want to go to their engineering program, but basically which one can i get into? With really really good essays

And also about 10 / 10 of the kids at my school who ED’d got into Cornell.

And about 10 more for RD

First, your supplement for the college of engineering basically asks you about your passion for math/science and engineering.

Test scores are good, GPA seems low but I may be because of your high school. Do you have an idea of what percentile you fall in? Your ECs are good enough an definitely math/science focused and you clearly show aptitude.

Out of CALS CAS and COE, CALS is no doubt easiest to get into but it would be difficult to transfer to COE if that’s on your mind (in other words back door your way in)

Yes you definitely can get in, I would say you have a very solid shot but it can go either way. It is no doubt toughest for Asian Males to get in. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you get denied but I think you have a good chance!

Thank you cortana431! Well i hope to conduct rigorous research this summer and possibly try to win Siemens or Intel semi-finalist. Thanks for all the information im pretty sure im in the top 10%

you should definitely be fine, I think!

Thanks bluenotebook2 for your kindness, i realize my GPA is a lacking but i hope that my passion and testscores ,combined with good essays can help get me in ED. And also
I have volunteered: Helping teachers mostly , tutoring
I have worked: IBBR, Tutoring, and Operation Fly Co-CTO, we raised a $50, 000 grant to help impoverished people in the D.C area
and i participated in the USNCO chem olympiad, sadly i missed honors by 1 point and missed the school topper by 3 But thank you i really love cornell and would like to get in

bump 10 char

no problem! I think it’s easy to see that you really like math. my question is why not caltech or mit? you can get in with a lower gpa as long as you got A’s in all classes related to your field… or at least, my friend did…

Well i mean i dont know i really REALLY like cornell and i always have, and i hope that makes me stick out its kind of something that i just like. I mean i have a 3.97 in all my math classes, and plus the competitions, but its mainly cause i love cornell

if you like the school that much then that totally makes sense! i thought you might be setting your bar a little lower because of that gpa, but cornell’s a fantastic school! if you don’t get in… it’s just that asian male thing.

yeah im aware of that asian male thing, but i also am scared of my gpa being rather low… but i did take the most rigorous course load possible from AP Chem in sophmore year and all

thanks for all your help, and the best wishes for your future endeavors as well

thanks! haha yeah no problem! you’ll be fine. if my friend could get into MIT with a 3.5 UW, you should be able to get into cornell with a 3.7 and those EC’s.

ECs are very solid, the internship and course load is solid as well. Your GPA is low, but I’m not sure what the average is at your school. Generally you would want a 3.8+ at the least and 3.9+ to have a clear shot as an asian male, but if lower GPAs are the norm at your school because of course rigor or style of grading, then make sure it is noted in your counselor recs. If you want to retake your tests you should consider doing so – 2300 is good but your 800 seems to be writing which is not considering very much based on what I’ve heard. I would aim for a 770/780+ for math and CR if you are willing to retake it. If you want to retake your SAT IIs you can do so to get the triple 800 which looks good on college apps (though it’s not going to help much). Make sure your teacher and additional recs are solid, and the essay is key. I’m pretty sure my supplement essay, which was about my interest in nanotechnology, helped me land one of the awards the CoE gives out.

At this point you have to realize what’s in your control and what’s not in your control. You can’t change your GPA or extracurriculars much at this point, so your efforts should be directed towards your essays, recs, and possibly tests if you are willing to retake them.

p.s. why are you applying Cornell ED? i would reccomend testing your shots with a nonbinding EA school like MIT/Stanford/Caltech. it also seems you have good connections at JHU and they have a top notch BME program.

If he does that though, he’ll be relegated to RD and that may be significantly harder than ED.

Thank you Colene and alias95, I just happen to like Cornell the most our of Hopkins ( my brother goes there ) and wash U was my other possibility but i just really like cornell and well does applying to two colleges lower my chance, because it shows im less focused, passionate about one?

Not for cornell - it wouldn’t affect your chances. However, you’ll need to be wary that if they deny you in your first choice college (within cornell) and accept you in your second choice college in ED you are obligated to go to that one.

two colleges in cornell being COE and CALS

engineerC

I would discuss the question of whether to apply to two schools (and whether it will lower your chance for Engineering with your guidance counselor).

In certain cases, it’s a natural fit – Examples – Computer Science (Engineering and Arts both work), if you were a psych major, Arts or Human Ecology would both work. Similarly, Business at Dyson (CALS) and Economics (Arts) fit well. Likewise (for the right student) Environmental Engineering (CALS) and Engineering. If you’re applying to Engineering and Arts, and the the programs don’t work well together, I’m not sure how I see that you can write a strong application for both. (Your ‘Why I want to be an engineer essay’ will look a bit odd to an Arts admission committee).

More importantly – do you want to be an engineer? Serious question. If the answer is yes, I think you should go to an engineering school, even if it isn’t Cornell. If no, I don’t think you should apply to Cornell’s Engineering School.

Thanks alot, well i understand i mainly want to concentrate on pre-med and maintain a good GPA, however as i realize you can go to Med school with any major, i would like to do majors that most arouse interest and passion in me – such as : Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, and … possibly… computer science.

I really like chemistry and applying all my math, and i dont like physics that much cause im on average a B+ student at it and i find it frustrating more than bio and chem. for the most part you could say that im undecided… since i want to do all three of those. .which all go into different colleges – CoE, CALS, and CAS… i just want some advice as of now i am probably going to rule out computer science… … but the biology vs chemical engineering is still pretty hard to choose hence why i want to apply to both Engineering and CALS, however i realize he awkwardness this would cause in the adcom’s if reading my engineering essay…

Thanks, a bit more advice please

you guys rock, im going to talk to my GC about this as well Thank you

Medical school is a fortune. Are your parents wealthy enough to pay for Cornell and medical school if that is a serious option for you? Or are you expecting a lot of financial aid?
