Chance me - ED Engineering

Following are my information:

Class of 2018; attend a public high school in the tristate area (250 kids in my grade)
UW GPA: 3.88, W GPA: 4.40
Class rank: Idk - probs top 6~7% based on comparison with ~250 kids in my grade
SAT: Decent score but didn’t submit b/c too low essay score
ACT: 35 (superscore & single score), Breakdown: English: 34, Math: 36, Reading: 35, Science: 35
SAT II: Math II 800, Chem 800, Physics 800
AP Scores: Calc BC 5, Physics I, 5 Chem 5; US History 4
Senior Course Load: English 4 Honors, AP Physics C, AP Stats, AP Econ Micro/Macro, AP Gov, Chinese 2 H, Linear Algebra/Diff Eq

Awards:

  • Qualification of AIME 2x
  • State Science League Top 10 individually and school
  • Canadian Senior Math Contest contest awards - top 1%
  • Korean American Math & Science Olympiad 1st Place
  • Univ of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Award - (from school)
  • Presidential Award Bronze Volunteer
  • Scholar Athlete Award for Soccer

Extracurriculars

  • Founder and President of Rocketry Club, Science Newspaper Club
  • President of Math Team
  • Vice President of FBLA, Korean Club, NHS
  • Varsity Soccer 4 years
  • Autism Care Church
  • Local library summer STEM program for 2 years
  • Summer Internship at a local company and research summer camp for 2 years

Rec Letters

  • AP Physics I: the best student in her class and performed outstandingly in the science league, which my teacher cares a lot about. The teacher seems to love me as both of our interest center around nerdy physics - 10/10
  • APUSH: the joker; participated a lot and was humorous (more like I was getting roasted all the time), but didn’t get an A-range grade. I think he knows I at least tried hard as a non-native American - would rate 8.5/10
  • AP Calc BC: the only student to skip 2 levels of math in the school; very positive guy - 9.5/10
  • Principal (additional rec): helped me create 2 clubs at high school and knows how much effort I put into my passion

Extra Info:
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Strength: Leadership, (unique) living in Germany/Austria for 5 years in middle school years, math curriculum (is this even a hook anymore? haha)
Weakness: weak humanities curriculum (English regular until junior year, B-range grade in APUSH, 2nd year foreign language b/c moving around and AP Chem overlap), no major awards (no Intel, Olympiad, etc.)
Any extra information: love airplanes, play soccer. I am writing my essays based on these two topics in general… I also wrote Cornell supp based on global warming issue and tied it to my research done over summer

Thank you so much!

I don’t see why you won’t be accepted, unless you screw up your essay really bad. Good luck.

Forgot to mention some stuff:

ACT Essay - 11
Interview: 9/10 - 1 hour interview with an alum in my town who majored in Econ and currently writes econ articles for Bloomberg. He couldn’t really ask me much about specific engineering questions, but we did talk about general college life and he gave me a lot of advice in that area. He seemed to care about every individual applying to Cornell and I loved his sincerity.

Thank you again!

Don’t put too much stock on the alumni interview, Cornell doesn’t place too much weight on it, but if you had a good impression then that’s great.

You have a very strong application.

Thank you @CornellUni! Wish to post this thread up on the Cornell 2022 ED Acceptance thread as well!

What major are you applying to within the engineering school?

@givemethtcheese I applied Materials Science, but subject to change to one of these: Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Computer, Computer Science, Materials Science (virtually everything lol)

For Cornell engineering do you guys think that a 720 in math 2 and a 4 in ap calc bc is a killer to my application…? Sorry just asking to know because currently incredibly nervous.

@HappyPiano4114 i don’t believe it is a killer to your application, but it would be important to demonstrate a high level of skill in math in other areas of your application in order to demonstrate that you just happened to not do outstanding on those exams
