Chance me ED for Union Class of 2021? :)

Hello all,

I am quite aware of the prevalence of these “chance me” type posts on this website, but I have determined that the only way to lessen my anxiety is to post here and gather some opinions from the community relating to my chances of acceptance. Here we go, and a big thank you to anyone who reads through this/replies! Truly does mean the world to me.

Here we go…

Just to let everyone know, I applied ED to Union for the Class of 2021. I am just looking for some opinions on my chances of acceptance so I can lay the ground work for some realistic expectations/ look towards applying RD to other schools if need be.

GPA: 3.46 UW
ACT: 27 (33 Writing, 35 Reading, 21 Math, 20 Science)
AP (listing the AP classes I have taken/am currently enrolled in and the grades I received on the AP exams):

European History- 4
U.S. History- 5
English Language & Composition- 5
Art History- 4
U.S./Comparative Government- currently enrolled
English Literature- currently enrolled
Studio Art- currently enrolled

ECs: Model United Nations (have attended 9 conferences thus far, won Best Journalist, Outstanding Journalist, and Honorable Mention in Press Corps committee, currently serve as the chairperson for Press Corps in local MUN chapter), did some graphic design work for local nonviolence/activism group, attend weekly youth group and volunteer with said group, participate in YMCA Leaders volunteering club, have been taking lessons for guitar for 5+ years, employed at part time job

-Strong recommendations (AP Lang. teacher & former teacher/Model UN club adviser)
-Excellent essay (hopefully so–English is my passion so I tend to excel in English-related activities)
-Had an interview on campus that I believe went really well
-Senior 1st quarter GPA 3.67

Some prevailing worries I have about my application…

It is clear from looking at my transcript that I have excelled in excelled in the humanities and fallen a little short in the STEM-related fields. Last year (junior yr.), I did not take a math or science class so as to focus on my APs and such, and this year I am taking Algebra II, the math course typically taken as a regents-level junior–it should be noted that I am doing quite well in this course though. I only have only unit of foreign language, that being the time I spent taking French in middle school. For what it’s worth (which isn’t much), I do wish I could have maintained a higher GPA throughout my high school career and excelled in more Math/Science courses. I know I cannot explain away my application and justify every piece, but truth be told, I am quite confident that had I not gone through some of the hard times I faced my freshman/sophomore year, I would have been able to maintain at least a 4.0 no problem.

I am looking to major in English and minor in Art History if all goes according to plan.

First of all, thank you so much for reading through all of this information relating to my academic record; it means a great deal. Now, could anyone give me their honest opinion on my chances of getting into Union ED? Thank you again!

Ignoring early decision, it looks as though you are a very strong applicant and it seems to be a high match. However, since you are applying early decision, you have a very good chance of acceptance, especially if you do an interview/have very good essays. I am also applying and have similar stats, this is what my college counselor told me.

Good Luck to you!!!

@tazoz123 thank you so much for your reply! I am a little embarrassed by the sheer length of my post but I really did get carried away…a combination of nerves and excitement! Your reply eases my nerves. I wish the best of luck to you as wel!!

Hi! I applied ED to Union a couple of weeks ago. I’m extremely anxious to hear back because its my top school. I’ve had a college coach throughout my whole college admissions process, so I’ve had a lot of guidance with writing my essays. I have visited campus 3 times, once for an on campus interview that I believe went very well. I’ve been on my High School Honor Role Freshman through Senior year. I struggled a lot academically Junior year (specifically with AP Physics and Honors Pre-Calc). Although, I wrote an extra essay in the additional information section of the common app explaining my struggles with the classes and what I learned from them while I was choosing my classes for my Senior year. To support the claims I made in my additional information essay, I ended the first quarter of my Senior with a 98/100 (3.9/4) weighted GPA. My Cumulative Unweighted GPA is a 3.5/4, and my Cumulative Weighted is a 3.64/4. I did not submit my any test scores because I am not a good test taker (especially when it comes to Reading Comprehension). I took AP Physics I my Junior year and I am currently taking AP Art History, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Psychology. I am also taking Honors Calculus which is still taught at the AP level at my High School with just a different teacher, so I am still required to take the AP Calculus AB test in May. Extra Curricular wise I have been in every show of my High School’s Drama Club since my Freshman year, and I was elected onto the Drama Club Council for my Senior year. I have been a Racing and Development (RAD) ski instructor at Attitash for going on 3 years, and have been coaching there for going on 4 years. I was a Driver’s Education Teacher’s Assistant for a portion of my Junior year. For 2 Summers, I worked at a software company called Demandware. And during the second Summer, I worked during Demandware’s acquisition by Salesforce.com (so I’ve technically worked for Salesforce.com for a couple of months as well). I have participated for 3 years in a competitive audition based chorus at my school known as North Shore Voices. I have also recorded songs with an education based group sponsored by MIT, and have performed for charity based fund raisers. I believe my essays are extremely strong considering all the time and editing I have spent on them, and I also think my Teacher Letters of Recommendation are strong as well. I have 2 alumni recommendations from people I worked with at Demandware as well. Lastly, I am fortunate enough to be able to pay for college without need-based financial aid. I’m going in as an Undecided Major, but I have a strong interest in Social Studies specifically the Social and Psychological aspects to Economics and Government. If somebody could let me know what they think my chances are that would be amazing! I’ll post when I hear back! Thank you all so much
