I'm applying to Emory (only emory not oxford) EDII and I was wondering how I'd stand:

Act: 31
GPA completely unweighted: 3.5
School doesn't rank
Did not report AP tests but: English and APUSH
Senior Year Course load: French V, English, Psychology, Anthropology, AP chemistry, painting, metal work, Honors Calculus (school offers very few APs)

Extracurricular stuff: Had a job 35 hrs/ week, head of a few clubs at my school, singing in the choir since 6th grade, 12 varsity letters (3 varsity sports for 4 years), many hours of volunteer work

Essays: CA: okay Why Emory: great
Recs: unsure, I don't get how people know, aren't you not supposed to read them?

Didn't apply for financial aid

State: NJ
Private School, very selective and small
White Female
Hooks: May be considered first gen college

Below 50% I think. Could be higher if your school is well known and has super-strict grading. A 3.5 is good at some schools and average at others.

About the recommendations, you should pick a teacher you know well and vice-versa. Having good recommendation, IMO, can make up for an “average” academic profile. How did you score on the APs, fours/fives would help. I’d say 30-50% depending on all the things I mentioned.

The GPA really hurts you though…

citylife: yeah, my school has strict grading. Its a well known private school, one of the top ranked in the mid atlantic area. I feel like its killing me slowly…

Don’t let this keep you from applying, but I’d say 15%ish. Being recruited for a sport would help tremendously, but without that, 12 letters kinda just means your school was very small and it was easier to letter.
