Colleges I'm applying to
Emory
Boston
Brown
Columbia
Yale
Stanford
MIT
Harvard

Any advice on how I could make it better? I totally appreciate criticism!

Emory- def. in
Boston- whether it’s college or university you’re in
Brown- very good shot
Columbia-very good shot
Yale- is a reach for anyone, but you def meet criteria…you’re ECs are a little weak but if you write a good essay def. a fair shot
Stanford- going to be very hard just bc they’re not huge on out of state-you need more direction with your EC’s (not that they’re bad) but again a good essay will def give help you, so concentrate on that
MIT- same as yale-math score may need to be a little high and def take a math SAT2
Harvard-same as yale

Emory- in
Boston- in
Brown- no
Columbia- no
Yale- no
Stanford- no
MIT- no
Harvard- no

Kind of harsh, but at my HS we have about 10 kids applying to each of those schools annually, and the ones who get in are national math champions, or Latin state champions, or started a foundation (e.g. [thewaterwell](http://thewaterwell.org/)), or SC presidents… etc., all with perfect scores and 5.0+ waited GPAs. And then sometimes they let random people in, but it is a crap shoot for most, you too in this case, so I just leaned towards the “no,” however, your stats are very impressive and you do have real chances at some of the Ivies, assuming you bring up your scores. The only solid “no” would be Stanford, in my opinion. I would say that’s the hardest school to get into.

that was actually very helpful, thanks! you’re really right, I shouldn’t get my hopes up. so again, thanks for the insightful advice.

only thing is, I noticed you’re in Chicago? haha northeast U.S. is probably much more competitive than here…and the ppl who get into these colleges from my schools haven’t had to be national math champions, start a foundation, etc.

Emory - match
Boston - safety

MIT- high reach
Harvard-high reach

good APs, test scores, and leadership
maybe more awards and good essay

Oh… Chance back!

Your legacies for Yale and MIT put you in good standing… along with your excellent stats. That many AP classes already is insane, and your rank is, as you know, as good as it gets (haha, maybe you could recruit a bunch of kids to come to your school to make the ratio even better?). Don’t stress about test scores yet, you have time to improve. Don’t stress about awards, more will come with this year and in the beginning of your senior year (the AP awards come out then). I think maybe take more of a leadership stance in some of your EC’s (maybe you can go for Editor-in-Chief of your newspaper? and captain of JV soccer might help, but maybe you’ll be varsity by then, who knows?). At the same time, though, I don’t get much of a sense of direction. If you don’t know what you want to do just now, that’s fine, but if there is a general field that you KNOW you’ll be working toward in college, you should try to focus most of your energy on that. Otherwise you risk looking like the generic over-achiever (often times pushed to do so by parents).

That said, because you’re a junior, you have a considerable amount of time to strengthen an already great application. If you continue to get better, I’d give you these chances:

Emory- safety
Boston- safety
Brown- match
Columbia- match
Yale- low reach/match (legacy helps)
Stanford- mid to high reach
MIT- low reach/match (again, legacy)
Harvard- mid to high reach

to tstong - thank you very much for that very insightful review of my credentials.

my aim is actually to get into a doctorate field, and I was also worried about the sense of direction and so made the plan to take the job at the local doctor’s office. what’s more, I’m hoping to work with a cardiovascular specialist this december, but if nothing but volunteer hours comes of it (highest goal: write a paper under his guidance) I will not mention it on the app.

I actually am hoping to be selected for Co-Editor of the newspaper because I feel like I have put in an ample amount of time and effort. Only reason I’m not going for EIC is because I have been in the club for less time than others.

really nice comment about “generic overachiever” - I just realized how true that may seem to a third party looking over what I’ve achieved. I will keep that in mind.

the only problem with the legacies is that they are from the same person. I have checked out CommonApp and they only allow one college to be listed per person, and most latest one. therefore I don’t think MIT would see that my sister went there for undergrad, it would only help me for Yale (where she is for med school). I don’t mind that though; I want to go to Yale more anyways.

again, thanks to all who’ve replied!

As you are a Junior, I recommend you to study for the SAT and retake it to get a higher score.

MIT doesn’t use the Common App; they use their own application available through their site, so you’ll be able to list the legacy for Yale on the Common App, and then list the ‘legacy’ for MIT on the MIT App. Note that MIT does not officially consider legacy in their admissions, though reputedly legacy students get a re-read by the Dean of Admissions before any final decision is passed.
Also regarding ‘legacy’ at Yale, I’m not completely sure about their policy but you’ll have to check if they count a sister as enough to be legacy.

Out of curiosity, do you go to Miramar HS? Anyways:

Emory - in
Boston - in
Brown - solid chance
Columbia - low reach
Yale - reach
Stanford - reach
MIT - reach
Harvard - reach

You’ve got a great application, but your SAT score is too low for an asian applicant. 2250 is recommended for HYP, but I would try to go higher than that.

Amazing transcript. Make sure you have outstanding rec’s and terrific essays that separate you from everyone, and you’ll go a long way. Good luck!

EphemeralEternal - thanks for the info on MIT app. didn’t know that!

An0maly - haha no, sorry I don’t go to Miramar HS. but I just looked up that HS on Wikipedia and mine seems quite similar…

thanks for the reply! I’ll definitely try to get a better SAT score Dec. 5.

Emory- in
Boston- in
Brown- mid reach
Columbia- reach
Yale- high reach
Stanford- high reach
MIT- high reach
Harvard-high reach

Good luck! =) Chance me back

Emory- in
Boston- in
Brown- match
Columbia- match
Yale- low reach (legacy definitely helps)
Stanford- low reach
MIT- low reach
Harvard- high reach (harvard is everyones high reach! =P)

Your test scores are solid, nothing impressive but still help you stay competitive. Your leadership ECs are spectacular, and so is your class rank - Being a valedictorian is very impressive. You have a great shot at any of the schools you listed- I would say to apply to all of them and just go from there, you are bound to get into one or two of them at least!

Good luck to you :)

Emory- in
Boston- in
Brown- in
Columbia- reach
Yale- mid reach
Stanford- high reach
MIT- high reach
Harvard-high reach

Emory -they deff will want you
Boston - should be no problem at all
Brown - hmmmm not quite sure, depends on the light you present yourself. Brown looks for a specific type of student
Columbia - reach unless you applied early
Yale - reach either way
Stanford - could be possible
MIT - maybe so; math/science may not be strong enough for MIT competition
Harvard - ehhhh hope for the best for this one.

Chance me back?

to people who reply in future - what if I did Yale SCEA? or Stanford ED?

You do NOT need to take your SAT’s again! Trust me, your score is good enough! Everything seems like it is in tip-top shape. Just make sure you establish good relationships with your teachers for future recommendations and your essays should be good! If you can accomplish these things, I see some big packets bursting through your mailbox next year ;-)
