Chance me-Florida State University

Alright, let's attempt to make this short (I have a history for dragging things on, I apologize in advance). I am a female, junior in high school, and getting ready for the oh so wonderful experiance of choosing colleges. But you see, it was made easy for me. I currently live in illinois (Around chicago area) but was originally born in sarasota, florida. While there, my parents signed my sister, twin brother and I up for 'florida pre-paid college program'. Basically, after conformiation, I can attend any public florida college, and tuition is covered. Atomatically, my first choice was Florida State University. I'm looking to get a master's in clinical psychology. Funny aspect? my twin brother ALSO wishes to attend there. We visited the campus a bit ago, and I ADORED IT, as did he. We decided, if we're accepted, we will attend FSU without moments hesitation. One problem: I'm overly stressing that I won't get in, I heard it's much more competitive, PLUS, I'm out-of-state. So, here the run down of my high school situation:
Freshmen year: I didn't do very well, I will be honest. GPA: I'm unsure of.
Sophmore year: Did much better, but towards the end of the year was trying to keep my grades up (Delt with a death of a close family friend, and put my dog down around the same month)
Junior year: I'm maintaing anywhere from a 3.4 GPA to a 3.6 right now. I am in Advanced Placement Junior english.
Senior year: I am enrolled for three more AP classes (AP enviormental science, AP senior english, and AP psychology)
So, I have a total of four AP classes throughout high school. I can usually maintain within a B average. Have not taken ACT, but am estimating about a 24 (I know, not the best, but I've been studying very hard for the math portion, which is the one that will kill me.) I have a job (Have sense freshmen year) have been playing violin for about nine years now, and have a TON of community service hours. I also won 'author of the month' last year for my school, and plan on writing a very good essay (In the process of it now). So, basically, do I even stand a chance? I know that any college probably doesn't look too positivly at out-of-state students, but do you think that if the admission see's that a twin brother and sister, from out of state wish to go to their school, it will be a positive effect? Please help, I desperatly wish to be a 'nole, and I have this nawing feeling that I won't make it. Any advice would be great, thank you.

Also, side note. I don't know if this will count on anything, but it's something I'm proud of. I have completed a full novel, would that be something to say on my addmission essay? And also, I have competed in many solo ensembles for violin, and have never ranked less then a division II (Excellent) and often rank division I (superior, as high as it comes.)

UPDATE: I JUST took the ACT's, and pretty much balled my eyes out. I got a 21 composition. On the two subjects that I'm very strong at, I didn't even hit high 20's on them. Most of my teachers (especially my AP english teacher) were very surprised. I'm taking it again on june 11th, trying to increase it as much as I can. I've bought a prep book, which I've already read through, and plan to take all three of the practice ACT tests in it. But, if I can't get my score up over 21, what are my chances? I'm a poor test taker, but I do NOT want to use that as an excuss, especially if I try my hardest. If the score remains 21, is my chances of gaining and FSU acceptence crushed? Please help, I'm in desperate need of some kind of knowledge. Thank you!

You should really look into USF (University of South Florida) as well! Honestly, it is my first choice. I toured it a few months back and fell in love with it. FSU WAS my first choice until I toured USF.

I’m going to be honest… A 21 composite isn’t going to get you into FSU if you do want to go there. I know that USF’s average ACT scores if between at least 24 to 27. Somehow, I managed to get a 27, but I am going to take the ACT for a third time in September to see if I can get a 28 or higher for the Florida Bright Futures 100% scholarship. I just looked up FSU’s average ACT scores and they are pretty much the same as USF - at least a 24 to 28. I will admit that they seem to be a bit more competitive than USF.

BUT, if you want to get that ACT score up, buy “The ACT for Dummies”. It needs to be the most recent edition. I got it about two months before I took the ACT for the first time. I didn’t study from it much and I got a 26 the first time. Then, I took the ACT again. I had studied from the book a little more, and I got a 27. Now, I’m going to really emerse myself in the information from the book, take all of the practice tests (timed) and then take the test again. I’m pretty confident that I can get my score up. And statistics show that most students who take the test more than once tend to increase their scores by at least one point! You have very good chances! You can get the “ACT for Dummies” book on Amazon.com for, like, $5! :D

Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions! :)

Thank you for your advice, really, I needed some kind of knowledge. I have visted USF, and I did NOT like the school. I suppose it’s just all based upon preference. I know that when I recieved my ACT scores, it had FSU statistics (I was able to check off and write down schools I wanted to compare my score to) and it said 50% had 24-28. But what does that mean about the OTHER 50%? That’s what I’m curious about. I mean, I’m hoping that they’ll see that my brother and I will bring diversity to their school, but are considered in state because of our college pre-paid program. Also, they KNOW they’ll get their money straight, because of this program. My ACT score says NOTHING about my character, nor my intellegence, and I plan to mention this in my essay. If the fact that I’m a good violinist, take AP classes, have a job and an IMMENSE amount of comminuty service hours, as well as good grades is all forgotten because of one test score? Perhaps the school may be too shallow to my liking. I really hope they can realize that some individuals just AREN’T strong test takers. I’m going to give it 150%, if it it doesn’t go up, I won’t complain. As long as I tried my best, I didn’t fail.

I got into FSU with the bare minimum of a 24 ACT score with a 4.1 GPA. Since your GPA is lower you’re going to have to bring up your score. They do also look at how rounded you are as a student. So community service and clubs are a big plus. Also, AP classes are now a big factor. The more you have means you’re application is put into the first pile. Which means you will be in the first round of people chosen something like that, but don’t count yourself out.
