Chance Me, Florida Universities or Affordable OOS

3.4 wgpa and 26 ACT and top 50%. Switched from a large ok public high school that had transient military/civil service children. AP classes were not available to 9th and 10th graders and only four honors courses. School was known for sports. Now at top 50 public high school and took many honors classes and 1 AP in 11th. School is top twenty in state and is very competitive so availability was limited last year. School is known for academics and sports. All AP classes offered but students who start as freshmen have priority. Transfer kids receive no guidance. New school has great teachers and definitely a better education. Is it feasible to apply for a Florida University? Double legacy in immediate family at UCF. Double legacy in family at U of Miami. The counselor suggested that below a 4.0 my only option is community college. Help!

I am a senior now and taking 5 AP classes. I decided not to dual enroll to improve my chances despite meeting all graduation requirements in the new state.

Lets look at UCF. The average GPA is 3.8 and ACT score is 27. The 25th percentile had a 24 while the 75% percentile (top 25%) started at 28. Your ACT score is a touch low, but within range, while your GPA is a little low. Think about taking the ACT again and trying for a 27 to help compensate for your low GPA. If so, you have at least a low reach/high match for UCF.

Out of Florida’s public colleges, UCF is about in the middle to top half for admissions. If you can get into UCF, you can get into most of the others. Your GPA makes UF/FSU almost impossible (UF has the highest admissions standards for the Florida Publics), but that shouldn’t be your standard for determining if you want to go to a 4 year college.

Lets look at FAU. It’s 2013 freshman profile is as follows:

High School GPA: 3.38 - 3.98
ACT composite: 22 - 26
SAT total: 1520 - 1740

You clearly meet this range.

Now, you can still go the CC route, as this will allow you to save money and then open up schools such as UF/FSU/UCF, etc… As a transfer student, your high school GPA will no longer matter, so even if you don’t get into UCF, you can still make it later as a transfer student.

Good Luck!

PS: you may also want to take a look at some of the Florida Privates, such as Flagler College. Tuition is higher (15K a year at Flagler, vs 6K at UCF), but if you can get any need based aid, they may prove an option.

I would recommend using College Navigator to see tuition/COA numbers and admissions data for these schools:

Thank you for the great information!
