Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): partial legacy, my strong interest in both the biological sciences and business (I think that makes me a really good fit for Dyson considering it's in CALS)

Reflection:

Strengths: my unique interest makes me a good fit for CALS, my GPA, my relevant ECs
Weaknesses: average testing as an applicant to a school with about a 10% acc rate

Thanks so much in advance. Also, for incentive, if any of you would like to be chance'd back, please post a link in your responses.

i think you i have very good shot because you a very strong EC and a very competitive SAT score. 2190 is a very good score. i seen student with 2000 got accepted. Also you are part legacy which it is good. And you recommendation from your US teacher will help because he/she is a alumni.

Chancing back!

Since your ECs look strong, I recommend writing an essay on them, especially since it looks like your strengths are in German and volunteering. However, ONLY WRITE ON WHAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT. I’ve seen people write essays on volunteering (like the thousands of other bland ones), and it will not stand out. You can still write your essay of volunteering, but it should be a reflection of your passion and interests.

Otherwise, your stats are average for applying to Cornell. Just make sure those essays are great, maintain a high GPA, and get good recs! And above all, STAY INTERESTING. And you’re good to go. :)

I think you have a very solid shot. Though AEM ED is one of the tougher ones - I wouldn’t really surprised either way (I’ve seen kids with lower statistics get in, and kids at your level not) however I do think the odds are in your favor.

Thanks for the replies! I totally understand that my scores are probably average in the applicant pool and the acceptance rate definitely doesn’t help. What I’m really hoping will put me over the edge is the fact that I have a unique interest in both business and biology which AEM actually emphasizes considering its location within CALS.

I talked to a Cornell admissions officer at length about this and she told me it really helps to have this kind of fit with AEM (especially considering the fact that most applicants go purely for finance with aspirations of a Wall Street career). It is for this fact alone that I really believe I have a legitimate chance and I will make sure to address it in my essays.

Thanks for the comments so far and more are always welcome

What you just said is true, and if you pinpoint that in your essay and it comes off as authentic and genuine you’ll have a solid shot for sure.
