-In all honesty, there are very few clubs or awards offered at my school. We aren't known for academic success, so the administration focuses on the behavior issues. In terms of my school, I'm doing fairly well with rigorous courses (honors math and english, will have taken 7 AP tests by graduation). I'm going to take my SAT subject tests in May. My writing skills are decent, but can definitely be improved. Any other questions- feel free to ask. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Definitely in at Central Michigan and very, very likely in at the University of Michigan. You’ll likely get a lot of money at CMU and a nice scholarship at U of M.

Amherst and Harvard are reaches for everyone.

I don’t get a strong impression that you are academically qualified for Harvard, given your GPA/SAT.

Both very constructive responses. Thank you. Any other comments/advice?

I second silverturtle. Harvard is out of your league. Even if you were to be admitted, you would pale in comparison to the rest of the student body.

I would suggest saving it for grad school–some people flourish in college.

Alright. I know Amherst and Harvard are both incredible reaches, and I’d agree that I’d really struggle at Harvard. My parents are under the impression that I’ve found a cure for cancer or something, so they want me to apply. The reach that I think I’m better equipped for (though still would have to work insanely hard to keep up, but I think it’ll be worth it because they offer a major I’m REALLY interested in) is Amherst. It’s my first choice. What would you say my chances are there (without completely demolishing my hopes and dreams, of course. =P) realistically?

Again, thank you all for your input. It’s very helpful. =]

SAT scores do not a person make. Write a creative essay, submit extra recs and go for it. I got into Emory with lower Stats. You guys have no right to tell the poster she would not match the rest of the student body based on SATs alone (which btw, those are considered great SATS to a lot of people). But SATs have not been shown to accurately prove someone’s success in college, they just prove how well you can prepare for a certain test.
