I’m a senior at a very good public high school in New Jersey and am curious of my chances at Amherst.

Here are my stats:

4.0 GPA (my school doesn’t rank but I am probably in the top 5-10 people out of a class of 350)

2380 SAT (800V, 800W, 780M)

800 and 760 on 2 SAT IIs

I have taken the hardest course load at my school (4 APs up until this year - all 5s) and am taking another 3 this year.

I am an all-state trumpet player, editor of the school paper, president of the community service club, captain of the nationally-recognized quiz bowl team, and have helped found a service non-profit that has raised over $20,000 (and has been recognized by CNN).

Main Awards: National Merit Semifinalist, Cum Laude, Harvard Book Award, Cornell Book Award, AP Scholar with Honor, President’s Volunteer Service Award, Scholastic Writing Award (National Gold Medal)

Your stats are good enough to get you into the 1 pile. After that, it will depend on your essays. They must be stellar and showcase who you are and make you stand out from others with your stats. You have a good chance. Go for it! But remember, elite college admissions are a crap shoot.

You have a good chance. My S with VERY similar stats to yours was wait-listed last year.Make sure you have fab essays, and make a compelling case why Amherst needs you. Make sure you visit and they know it. Contact a prof(can be done thru their fab on-line catalogue) and attend a course. Don’t hang back…

Lucky D. If you really want Amherst, best to make a strong effort…Was she from the NE? I think there are so many applicants from the NE it is a disadvantage.

Does a visit matter at Amherst? I know at some schools (including Bates, oldBatesie), visits are thought to matter. But, Amherst may be overwhelmed with so many applicants that they may or may not pay attention. I have no data and am not asserting an opinion one way or another. My son got in to Amherst and quite a number of other schools without any visits and we live 1.5 hours from Amherst.

A visit can’t hurt, and with acceptance rates so low, even for the best applicants, I recommend that applicants show sincere interest to their top choices, esp if they are not ethnically or financially disadvantaged.
I have no hard data about Amherst, just a waitlisted son with fab stats who is now at Midd.
