Chance me for Andover, Choate, Deerfield, etc. ?

Hi!

I'm a 12 year old girl attending a michgian private school, looking to apply for prep schools in 8th grade, and have around half a year to improve my chances (I start 8th grade this coming school year). I'm not sure exactly how hard it is to be accepted into schools like Andover and Phillips Exeter, so I might be a bit underqualified.

ACADEMICS:
Grades- 4.0 GPA. I have A's in A+'s in all subjects, have taken all offered advanced core classes the past year. In 8th grade, I will be taking Advanced Algebra 2, Advanced English 8, Honors Chemistry, Latin, Art, History, etc. I was also in a gifted and talented program up until 7th grade, when I switched schools.

SAT & ACT- I took the ACT & SAT this past year (7th grade), and will retake both again in 8th grade. On the SAT, I got 2060 overall, 620 in reading, 740 in math, 700 in english, and 11 on my essay. On the ACT, I got 29 composite, 33 in english, and 30 in math.

Awards- I qualified for MMPC Part 2 for math, and got 1 national gold medal, 1 regional gold key, and 1 regional silver key for Scholastic Art & Writing ( one of the most prestigious competitions in the country). I also won awards in other small writing contests such as 1st place in a Kiwanis Club competition, Creative Communications, State Semi-finalist in Letters about Literature, and 1st place in Community Financial essay contest.

EXTRACURRICULARS:

Piano- 7 years

Art- 5 years, 1 regional gold key, 1 regional silver key, and 1 regional honorable mention for Scholastic Art and Writing, one 1st place and two honorable mentions for Michigan Junior Duck Stamp, and other small art awards.

Clarinet & Choir - Only 1 year each-- I'm not sure I should put these on my application because I haven't gotten significant awards for each.

Chess- Only small awards such as 2nd place MI Woman's Championship Reserve and medals + cash from small club championships.

School Newspaper- the editor position is open next year so I'm hoping that I'll get it.

Sci Oly- I'm not really sure if this counts as an extracurricular... . I got 5th in the state for disease detectives, and 6th in the state for hereity. Next year I'll be participation in other academic competitions as well, such as quiz bowl and I am the chemist.

Sports- I dont have really big awards in sports, but still play sports :). I've done swimming for 3-4 years, and did track this year. Next year I'll be doing cross-country as well.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

I participate in community service monthly at a local hospital, and within my school.

What are my chances of getting into schools like Andover, and what areas should I really focus on for the next 1/2 year?

Do you need FA?

nope  i don’t think i qualify

You might want to look at some other schools. You seem qualified, but so is everyone else who applies. Have you looked at Taft, Middlesex, or NMH? Those are great schools which might be slightly less of a reach, even if you are qualified.

Saying that Middlesex is less of a reach is, in all respects, ridiculous.

If “less of a reach” schools are being recommended, look at Mercersburg, Kent, and the Hidden Gems thread.

Wow, looking at your stats, you are more than qualified academically. The only thing is, lots of kids apply academically qualified, its what makes you stand out that gets you accepted.

Did you quality for CTY SET? If not apply (you should get in via your SAT math score)

How good of a swimmer are you? Top schools like to see someone who can make varsity. Are your times as competitive as the varsity swimmers?
