Chance me for Andover, Exeter, Milton, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, and Concord?

I am currently in the 8th grade and I am applying for the 9th grade at Andover, Exeter, Milton, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, and Concord. My first choices are Milton and Deerfield while Concord is sort of my back-up school. All of my applications are already completed except for the Andover essays, which are due in three days. I have lived abroad for the past five years and go to a prestigious American school here, but I was born in and grew up in America and am a USA citizen. I will not be needing financial aid, or at least I don't think I qualify for it.

SSAT (first attempt)-
Upper Level Score Range : 500-800
Verbal Score 743
(Personal Score Range: 722 - 764, SSAT Percentile 92%)
Math Score 794
(Personal Score Range: 773 - 800, SSAT Percentile 99%)
Reading Score 731
(Personal Score Range: 710 - 752, SSAT Percentile 96%)
Total Score 2268
(Personal Score Range: NA, SSAT Percentile 98%)

Extracurriculars-
Violin: four years; Shanghai Conservatory of Music Grade 4 Exam (I received a merit score); first chair violin of my school orchestra in seventh grade; weekly private lessons
Piano: nine years; Shanghai Musician Association Grade 6 Exam; weekly private lessons
Singing/Oral: two years; weekly private lessons
Horseback Riding: four years; Certified Horsemanship Association Level 2
Table Tennis: three years; recreational
Soccer: two years; recreational
Golf: two years; recreational

Academics-
Grades: high honor roll (93+ average) every quarter since sixth grade; straight A's in all eight subjects
Language: I am fluent in both English and Chinese (yes, I can read and write) but I'm also looking to learn a new language at boarding school, such as Spanish
Classes: I take math, science, language arts, social studies, chinese, art/health (we take each for half the year), physical education, and orchestra-all the usual classes my school offers. In math I am doing Algebra 1 and Geometry enrichment.

Interviews-
All of my interviews were off campus because, obviously, I live abroad. My interviews went really well and by the end the interviewers were talking to me like I was already accepted, telling me how much I would love it at their school. I am relatively very young for my grade and my Andover interviewer told me that Andover might not accept me just because they don't think I'm mature enough, but I don't think that's very fair.

Other Stuff-
My recommendations should be really good and my essays were looked over by a family friend who currently attends NYU. The essays are probably a weak point of mine since I've always had Language Arts as my worst subject, but they shouldn't be too bad. Also I have sent in a recording of me playing violin & piano and a graded essay from my Language Arts class. I plan on visiting the schools that (might) accept me during my spring break, which starts March 17.

And... I think that's it. Chance me? (:

I don’t know about your chances, but I’ll tell you that it’s really hard to get into US boarding schools if you’re asian =( there are just tooo many students applying. in the end, they (probably) pick a few students whose parents are legacy or famous etc.

but it’s always worth a shot! hopefully they will remember you from your interview! =)

Perhaps Milton’s admissions office has changed their policy over the years since my daughter applied, but at that time it was easier for full-pay boarding students to gain admission than others. I think you have a good chance there.

vivsters-yeah, i know five other people just in my grade at my school who are applying this year and they all come from similar backgrounds as me. xD but yeah, thank you for the encouragement; i hope you get in too! (:

greennblue-yes, one of my friends applying this year, her sister actually got into Milton two years ago, so that probably gives her an advantage… but anyway, thank you! Milton is actually one of my first choices, so yeah. xD

bump… I’d love for anyone else’s opinion! :)

Yea, it is very hard to get in if you are from Asia (no racism intended) as there is just so many applying. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get accepted! You seem like a pretty interesting person! who knows … maybe well be in math class together in Andover (if we both get accepted) :)

konstantink-Well technically I’m an American citizen, but yeah, there are a lot of Asian people applying. xD Thank you, and I look forward to possibly seeing you at Andover! :)

Well blow stuff up together in chemistry xD we will wreak havok … it would be awesome if I got in … I really wanna go to exeter though … its my fav.

haha yeah! but then we’ll be so awesome they can’t kick us out. :stuck_out_tongue: yeah i really want to get into any of these schools… my fav is probably deerfield or milton though.

Deerfield has the best campus  but I think that Exeter is just overall a better school, my other picks are awesome too, like choate, hotchkiss and andover … If I dont get accepted to any, Ill shoot myself to the moon  I will study alienology

Oh, really? I haven’t visited any of the schools yet, 'cause I’m in China, but that’s good to know! And yeah, apparently Exeter had the highest average SAT scores in the entire USA in 2009. :open_mouth: Yes, all of the top schools are amazing. If I don’t get accepted to any, I wouldn’t have to suicide, because my parents would kill me. :stuck_out_tongue: But alienology sounds cool! :D

Being from China isn’t an excuse to not visit the schools when you’re applying as a full pay student, or so I’ve heard. The schools like to know your genuinely interested.

Also, “my Andover interviewer told me that Andover might not accept me just because they don’t think I’m mature enough, but I don’t think that’s very fair.”

Whether you think it’s fair or not, its done for your benefit. One of the things most boarding schools require is for the student to be both mature academically and socially because you are living away from home. Plus, the teachers have to live with you. Admissions Officers are quite good at judging maturity so perhaps take it as constructive criticism instead of calling it unfair.

Craysian-Thank you for reading and replying, I appreciate it. I wanted to visit, but my parents both did not have the time or was willing to spend that much money on an air-ticket to bring me. And yes, I agree that students have to be mature both academically and socially, but I don’t think maturity shouldn’t be judged just from age-the interviewer (not an Admissions Officer, an alumni) had just met me and barely knew me, only my birthday.

Then it shouldn’t be a problem if the interviewer recognized your maturity during your interview.

aaralyn - I won’t comment on your chances, but I do have a question for you, if you don’t mind. Deerfield and Milton are very different schools. Lots of students here are applying to Deerfield, but can you explain what attracted you to Milton? Thanks!

BTW, ethnicity should not be a factor in admissions decisions. Nationality - yes; ethnicity - no.

you seem like a really well rounded person and you have amazing grades. i think you are a good candidate for the school. good luck on march 10!

I do agree that you may be too young for andover. andover is much like a college and you are essentially treated as an adult from the moment you step foot on campus, like mmore than in other schools. It may be better for you to NOT go to andover, although from your stats you would excel there, just for that reason

Craysian-I hope it won’t. Thank you again for your comments! :)

dodgersmom-Okay, sure, I don’t mind. Well, for one thing, Milton is the school that first interested me in boarding schools, because the son of my dad’s former colleague and the sister of one of my closest friends both attend Milton now. Also, Milton has a diversity in students, is close to Boston, and has an amazing amount of clubs and groups to choose from. :)

ylaxw1123-Thank you for the encouragement! I have worked hard for this and I have a lot depending on it, so I really hope I get into any of these amazing schools. :D

ehphant-From what I’ve seen on Andover’s website and what I’ve read on here, I do have to agree that maybe I am too young for the school. I didn’t know this when I chose the schools I would apply for though. xD Despite the fact that I would appreciate being treated as an adult, I have to agree with you and Craysian on the fact that I might not be ready yet. Thank you for the encouragement and suggestion. :)

Andover really looks for students that stand out. There are plenty of people from china (at least 100) that apply per year that have the same resume (High Grades, High SSAT, Years of Music). Do you have any extra curricular activities that can possibly make you stand out?
