/r/chanceme didn’t give me any replies lmao, can you guys help me out?
Hey guys, I’m applying to a few schools for art.
These are the harder ones: USC, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, UCSD, Berkeley (I know that you don’t apply into the art program as a first year at ucb)
Stats/relevant academics
GPA: 3.75 UW
SAT: 1440 (760 English, 680 Math)
ACT: 33 (36 reading, 35 English, 27 Math, 33 Science, 11 writing)
AP: My small, rural school only offers 3 APs on campus. AP LIT (4) AP Lang (in progress, I’ve got an A), AP Calc (in progress, I’ve got an A)
I’m one of only two seniors that qualify for/are enrolled in the highest level independent study art course.
ECs
Auditioned Jazz Band lead guitar (2 years) recognized as an outstanding soloist at every contest, including state.
Band (4 years)
Soccer (3 years)
Outside of school
Elected head of political education at a local large University’s chapter of a large and well known national political organization.
I’m an active member of a few campus (at the same local university) reading groups on advanced texts regarding philosophy/political economy/political theory/history
Portfolio
For obvious reasons I’m not gonna post my portfolio, which I understand makes this a pretty inaccurate “chance me” but here’s a description
Content: Photography (Main) Painting/drawing/sculpture
It is all organized in terms of bodies of work that things pertain to, almost everything is from a large project (and I’ve described those on the art supplement applications).
In terms of quality: the portfolio was approved for admission by SAIC which is one of the top art schools in the country, but also has a high acceptance rate so it may not be a gauge.
I’ve worked one on one with an ex Photography/visual
Arts faculty from one of the named schools on darkroom techniques, he says that my work is on par with the top level students in advanced photo. My photography is based on alternative processes, large format cameras, etc. Things that only a handful of applicants (at most) are probably doing.
I’ve gotten many awards from local art contests. Some of my work was featured in a not insignificant art/literature magazine.
