Hey everyone, I'd like your sincere opinion on my chances of getting this scholarship. It's something I've wanted for years. If I don't have a chance for banneker key, do I have a chance for other scholarships (presidential)?
Here are my stats:
- Instate
- UW: 3.9, W: 4.074
- Rank: 2/457
- I've taken 7 APs, which include 4 I'm taking this year
- Hispanic female majoring in Mechanical Engineering; first in family of 6 to go to college
- SATs aren't that high: 610 and 610 in CR and Math
- Great recommendations from 2 AP teachers, one of which is a sponsor for the clubs I lead
- Heavily involved in school, I have 4 leadership positions (editor, club president, captain, and social chair for nhs)
- I also have leadership in my church youthgroup

I have gotten accepted into the engineering school and Honors College.

Thank you for your insight!

That’s a fine set of accomplishments. Congratulations. There’s lots to like about your resumé, and then there’s the 1220 when other candidates will have 1560s. If you are invited, there will be an interview. None of us can know what will happen in that interview. Almost certainly it will go well, but will something extraordinary happen that could make up for the 1220. Probably not or else it won’t be extraordinary. So I’m thinking it is unlikely you’ll get B/K but you are a very good candidate for a Presidential, which ranges as I recall from 2K to 8K for in-state students. Full disclosure: I should point out that my D might be a candidate for the B/K but an invitation would be a surprise.

I’m currently a Freshman in the honors college. My high school gpa was 4.52 W, 3.87 UW, my SAT score was a 1340 (650 M, 690 CR), and I was in the top 10% of my class. I did not receive the B/K or President’s scholarship. Both weigh test scores heavily, so sadly you are not likely to receive B/K. You may have more of a shot for the President’s and Dean’s scholarships, though.

On a side note, a lot of engineering majors are in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program in the honors college, so if you’re not sure which one you want to do, I suggest that one. While I’m not an engineer, I’m in EIP, and it’s a great program.

Ambition, if you don’t get an invite for B/K, I really wouldn’t sweat it too much. Sure you might be disappointed at first, but take a look at all the engineering scholarships that are available to you after your freshman year. If you do well in engineering, these scholarships can add up to at least the equivalent of the B/K. The link below is well worth a look:
