GPA: 4.1 W and 3.75 UW (freshman year brought me down A LOT, but for my sophomore and junior years I've maintained a 4.27 W, 4.00 UW)

I've taken 6 honors classes, but **no AP classes/b. This senior year I'm taking 2 AP classes (Econ and Chem) and 2 honors classes. I also just took an Intro to Sociology college course this summer at a nearby university.

SAT: 1990 superscored (640M/670R/680W)

ECs:
Tech Crew for plays - 12 hours a week - 17 weeks a year (Sophomore and Junior)
Science Club - 1 hour a week all school year (Sophomore and Junior)
*Next year I'll be VP of the Science Club
Some math tutoring as a part of Mu Alpha Theta - only like 8 hours total though (Junior)
65 hours of volunteer work at a local aquarium (Junior)

Honors/Awards:
Mu Alpha Theta
National Science Honors Society
RIT Medal

According to their calculator my EFC is $13,000 which I can afford. I am worried though that they won't think I'm worth the ~$40,000 in grants/scholarships/loanns.

The fact that you’re not taking a lot of APs is a little worrisome, but since there’s nothing you can do about that now, focus on raising your SAT by at least 100 points. If you get at least 700 on every section, that’ll DEFINITELY raise your chances!

Considering that Bates does not give a **** about SAT scores your advice is not justified, Thebeatlestoday (i.e 700’s will not improve OP’s chances at Bates). It’s ok to not submit them, disco, they’ll give you the benefit of the doubt – just write good essays :)

Actually, strong test scores can help at Bates. True, the school is entirely test optional and not submitting scores won’t count against you. But, that’s not the same as saying good test scores won’t help you. Bates considers test scores from applicants who choose to submit them and strong scores certainly lend weight to the academic evaluation. To the OP, I think it’s wise to submit your scores for consideration.

@sjh9524 My common app essay is pretty great, but I haven’t started the supplemental essay yet.

@Catria Would you even recommend applying at all? Do I have some sort of chance?

@niceday @International95@Thebeatlestoday I was planning on submitting my scores, but I can’t retake the SAT because I’m taking two SAT Subject tests in October.

I think you could get in, they will like your upward trend. You’ll need to write really good essays. They are not need-blind so needing that much aid will hurt your chances some. This might be overcome by you applying ED though. Make sure to have other matches/safeties that you’d like to go to as well.

If I felt you didn’t stand a chance, I would have said High reach; I reserve the High reach verdicts to those who don’t stand any chance whatsoever. But you have a chance, therefore I gave you a Reach verdict instead.

Try to get your SAT scores up and submit them. Otherwise, I might not submit them - you have the option to and they won’t look down on you for it.

I think Bates would be a reach for you. They are test-optional, which could work in your favor. If you don’t plan to re-take the SAT’s, I may suggest not sending your scores. Not sending can’t count against you, but weak scores can. Your GPA is high but your course load is not very rigorous - but good for you for taking on the two APs this year! I would work on strengthening your extracurriculars and leadership positions. Best of luck (:
