Chance me for Berkeley and UT Austin??

Hi! I was wondering if you guys could chance me. I’m currently a junior but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to see what I need to improve on. I plan on majoring in Business (I am aware that these are the hardest majors to get into at both schools), but how much do my chances increase with lets say, a major in liberal arts?
Race: Asian
Gender: Male
State : TX
Rank: Top 9% (49/524).
SAT : 2100 (Hopefully I can retake it and score a 2200+).

School Related Activities:

  • Varsity Cross Country (2 Years)
  • JV Basketball (2 Years)
  • Junior Achievement (President)
  • LiveSmart (President)
    -Model U.N (Secretary)
  • National Honor Society
    -DECA State Finalist
  • Multiple honor societies
  • Public Relations Intern at a Marketing Firm
    -MIT Launch Entrepreneurship Finalist

Thanks!

Isn’t UT-Austin auto-admit for top 7%? I understand you aren’t there yet. But you are extremely close. Is it possible that you could get into the top 7%? As for Berkeley, it’s going to be hard as an OOS student, but with an SAT of 2200+, it may be possible, but for right now I will say no.

Based solely on your rank, you are not going to make it to UCB.

You may have a better chance at UCB than UT. If you’re out of the top 8% (auto admit) range, UT is very hard to get into. Although a 2200 should about secure your chances.

UCs are a different story. If you don’t request financial aid, they will accept you with decent stats. Two people from my school with scores around 2020 to 2070 got into the college of letters an sceince at UCB.

The UC’s are publicly funded schools which are provided by California taxpayers; they don’t offer financial aid to OOS students because preference goes to instate students. Fees are $55K per year.

As an OOS student your SAT is not competitive for Berkeley and if you apply to liberal arts, that’s where you will stay because of all of the impacted majors.

Hi #Nevergiveupp, can you please elaborate when you say ‘UCs are a different story, if you do not request financial aid, they will accept you with decent stats’ - where would I say I dont request financial aid, is it in the UC Application?

Your stats aren’t competitive enough for the top tier UC’s and, you are a non-resident. Two strikes.
I don’t know what @nevergiveupp is referring to.

UCs prefer out of states students who are willing to pay full tuition. This is evident by the 20% acceptance rate slightly higher than the instate acceptance rate. Also, from the people who have gotten in from my school. From the past few years, those who scored 2000+ and didn’t request aid got in over those with 34/35 ACT scores who did.

You are most definetely a competitive applicant. A 2100 is a competitve score. That being said, you shouldn’t rely on it and you should try to do better! Also UCs don’t look at freshmen grades to calculate GPA. So that’s why UCB is better for you than UT. And I’m certain about this applying to you. Good luck!
