chance me for bing?

hey Binghamton is totally one of my top choice schools, and I wanna know if I have a good shot. Any comments would be appreciated.

My weighted average is 87.78, unsure of unweighted, they don't tell us.

SATs
CR 640 M 670 W 700 = 1310/2010
USH 650, LIT 630
I plan on taking Math 1 & 2 in the fall

Taking ACT in the fall as well.

As for my classes..
Honors english sophomore year
APUSH, AP ENG LANG and AP US GOVT junior year
AP ENG LIT, AP COMP GOVT and maybe AP STAT senior year
I'll have 4+ years of social studies, 4 years of english, science, and maybe math depending on if I get into the AP STAT class (they cut the regular 4th year math class due to budget cuts), 3 years of language

Also, I'm currently taking a college psychology class

ECs
I've done cheerleading since my freshman year, and I've been captain since junior year
Senior Class Coordinator of SADD, joined junior year
Key Club junior year
By the end of the summer I should have around 100 community service hours from various places, including a trip to New Orleans
I interned with a judge last summer, and he wrote me an AMAZING rec letter
I just got a job working at the front desk of NYSC, and I've been babysitting for years
I taught for a day at an underprivileged elementary school

thanks

Your EC’s, and SAT scores both seem to be pretty on par with what Binghamton accepts. But your GPA, while still unweighted, is a bit low for Bing. I would say Bing is a reach, depending on how good your letters really were, and what the rest of the applicant pool looks like.

If Bing really is your top choice, apply E.A. that way you might have a better shot, and worst case scenario at least you’ll know sooner rather than later.

binghamton is getting increasingly difficult to get in to. for this coming fall they accepted only 31% of applicants – their acceptance rate has been steadily declining.

if you go back and look at posts on this thread from the past year’s admission cycle you will see many applicants who were disappointed and surprised.

your weighted average is low for binghamton based on figures available for prior years - http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/pdf/measuresofexcellence.pdf</a> – other than the 31% acceptance rate, i haven’t seen/heard stats for the class entering this fall, but i would guess gpa and sat figures are higher.

i would never tell someone they don’t have a “shot” because you simply never know what on an application may appeal to an admissions officer – but please be realistic in putting together your college application list.

dreamerr: I was accepted for this fall and my average was 96, SAT was 1430/2100, ACT was 30, courses included AP English Lang, AP English Lit, AP World History, AP American History, AP Economics, AP Psychology, AP Calculus and AP Physics…any other courses were Honors. SAT subject tests were Math (730), Physics (660) and US History (660). I was on the Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society, participated in a couple of clubs and have 400+ hours of volunteer service at our local hospital.
That said, many of my friends with stats lower than mine did not get in. I heard from my guidance counselor that it has become a more difficult school to get into. I did get into SOM so if you are applying to a different school the requirements are probably different. I would work on your average and try to get it up to low/mid 90’s if you can…also try to get your SAT’s up closer to 1400. I think an ACT of 30 or more would be perfect. Your classes and EC’s look great. Good Luck

And it might help if they know you’re interested, visit the school, maybe talk to an admissions counselor, and like I mentioned earlier, apply E.A. all while trying to increase your GPA this year. You never know.

How do you apply E.A?

I don’t think you can consider it a safety school, but it is not a reach. Basically, I wouldn’t count on anything.

To better your chances:

Your GPA is somewhat low, so I would try to improve your SAT score by 50 points or more.

Course load and ECs look great, though.

Bleed - Early Action - You have to submit your application by the EA deadline, it’s usually mid December (dec. 15th) I think? Your high school guidance office would be able to accommodate this if you plan accordingly, and unlike early decision, it’s not binding. By far one of the smartest things I did as far as college applications are concerned. I knew before Christmas that I was (most likely) headed to Binghamton.

Thanks a lot guys, this was a lot of help. I go to one of the largest, more well known schools in NYC that’s usually well known among SUNYs, if that stands for anything. Basically, some of the other SUNYs like buffalo and albany accepted everyone with an 82 average and above from my school this year, and bing accepted more than 100 students.
I thought they weren’t doing EA this year though… does anyone know for sure? I visited the school in April, and I would be aiming for the college of community and public affairs I think… still not definite.

For Binghamton, for the applicants for the 2010 school year do not have Early action as a choice. Only regular admission. All the dates for applications are on this site: [Binghamton University - Undergraduate Admissions - Check Application Status](http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/check-application-status.html)

[Binghamton University - Undergraduate Admissions - Dates and Deadlines](http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/apply/dates-and-deadlines.html)

so although there are no dates for early action, it still sounds like the earlier you get an application in the better.

based on threads posted here, it sounded like a LOT of EA applicants were being deferred this past year. just guessing here – but maybe they’re now calling it “modified rolling admissions” to allow themselves the most flexibility – decide early when they want to, decide later when they want to – without applicants expecting to hear by a specific date.

I have friends with excellent EC’s and test scores (1350+/32 ACT) and they were all wait-listed/offered guaranteed transferred. That said, I do believe it will be a reach for you with that GPA. Work hard senior year, and maybe that will help tip the scales. Next year should be an easier year than 2013’s as far as applicant numbers, but not by much.

That’s what I thought about EA. Thanks for the chancing though, guys. I hope it’s not too much of a reach =/

Do you think outstanding essays would make a big difference? English/writing has consistently been my strong suit.

A strong personal essay could definitely help your application out. Your high school’s reputation could also play a factor. I believe they look at that too, not just your GPA, but how good your GPA is for your particular school. Some high schools ARE notoriously harder than others… or maybe some just have MAJOR grade inflation. But either way, just work really hard on putting together a strong application (ask for letters of recommendation like NOW if you haven’t done so already… start on that essay…) so that you can submit it early on (I’d suggest before Christmas vacation, closer to Thanksgiving if possible). Not only will this enable you perhaps a better chance, but you’ll have it done and over with, and you’ll know earlier!

My school definitely has a good rep among the SUNYs, so hopefully that should help me out :)

Two more questions: To what extent do they consider senior year grades/classes? and Would 3s on my AP exams hurt me?

Thanks so much for all your help guys!

The University definitely looks at senior year grades but by the time most students apply, it is before midterms. The admissions office does have you send your midterm and final transcripts to them so the university can see how your last year was.

I don’t know if the University would see the AP scores until you are accepted and have your scores sent to the school unless it is on your high school transcript that is sent with your application. I know that my high school never listed AP scores, only regents scores on the transcript. With 3s however, you should be placed out of a lot of general education classes if you do get in and decide to come.

I was waitlisted and didn’t get in with better stats and EC’s than you, so I would say that your chances are dismal unless you’ve got some unique stuff!

I also go to a school that has good rep with the SUNY’s (#22 in U.S.) and pretty much everyone I know that got under a 1350 or so didn’t get in.

I’d say its a reach, but good luck!

bdmet - Wow, my SAT score was around a 1280 I think and I had gotten in for the class of 2012 Early Action. I didn’t realize how SAT heavy they became for this year’s applicant pool!

This is probably a dumb question, but does Bing use weighted or unweighted GPA for admissions? Daughter is an IB diploma candidate, so her coursework is extremely rigorous.
