I just started my first year at Middlebury College (I was accepted ED) but I am realizing it is too rural and too small and too homogenous for me. I am from Rhode Island and Brown was always my close second choice and now I think (know) that is where I belong. I am planning on remaining enrolled at Middlebury College through the first semester and apply to Brown ED in November. If I am accepted, I will withdraw from Middlebury. If rejected, I will stay. Basically, I am wondering if I have a good shot at getting into Brown or if I would be wasting my time trying to get in while juggling college work.

I got a 2260 on my SAT - 690 (Math), 770 (Reading), 800 (Writing)
I received my IB Diploma
I was class president
I was captain of both my school and travel soccer teams
I was in National Honor Society, student government, SADD
I did volunteer work in my community
I have a summer job
I did a 10-day medical camp out of Boston before my Junior Year in which I was selected to travel to Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School where I got to work with cadavers, etc. (I want to be pre-med)
I am captain of my intramural soccer team in college
I am taking a full course load of college credits at the moment

Just trying to get a sense of my chances and whether or not I should apply.

I don’t think you are permitted to do what you’re planning to do. Once you’ve attended another college, I think you have to apply as a transfer student, for which there is no ED option. Someone let me know if I’m wrong.

You most definitely cannot do this. And Brown does not look at transfer applications for mid-freshmen year transfers.

You may be right that Middlebury is not the best place for you. I have known students to be sure of this early in their first semester, and who did eventually transfer. But unless you want to drop out, you have to be there this entire year. And if you do want to transfer, you need to get good grades and be active there to succeed.

While as a transfer applicant your HS stuff will matter some, what will be more important is how well you have done the year at the college you are at. So buckle down and have a fantastic year at Middlebury (and in the process, who knows, you may find you do like it there!)
I have seen some students come into Brown the first week of Brown courses, or second semester of freshman year, but it is VERY rare, and usually students who were at the Very top of the wait list, or had been accepted but asked to “transfer back” when they changed their mind after matriculating somewhere else. (note I think this is less than 2-3 max a year) Since you were not in the original applicant pool, I think sophomore transfer is your only possibility. Read the Brown transfer thread for other students experience etc.
