Chance me for Brown ED? will chance back!

Penriquez, your excuse for the low test scores don’t hold water. There’s a reason so many get an 800 on math, for anyone who really knows math and is advanced iN the way an ivy would expect from some calling themselves a math/science guy, an 800 is child’s play.

Hispanics don’t get the bump today other URMs do. There are so many highly qualified Hispanic applicants. I’d pretty much ignore those telling you you’re going to get a URM boost. Brown is a major reach.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Waverly. I wasn’t exactly banking on the URM bump and I know that my scores don’t exactly stand out, but I didn’t think they were as pitiful and gross as you seem to think they are. Also, I wasn’t aware that all schools admitted students strictly on the merit of their SAT scores, I thought your reports, extracurriculars, and service stuff counted, but according to the College Acceptance Wizard Waverly, that seems to mean nothing. I guess raising $7000+ for Haiti and being acknowledged by Vassar College doesn’t mean anything. I guess things have changed.

Also, your first paragraph is kind of grammatically confusing. How were your SAT Writing scores? Also, according to your profile you’re 54 years old. Why are you chancing 17 year old kids on College Confidential? I don’t mean to be rude, I’m just curious.

Happy to address your curiosity. I spent the past 22 years working as a college admissions officer and a high school college counselor. In my retirement I volunteer my time helping college bound kids.

I didn’t mean to upset you, really. But I do get testy reading some of the things kids write here. My last job was at a very top high school, where about 20% of the student body got 800 Math scores, so I’m hard pressed to agree a marginal math score makes sense for anyone saying they’re a math whiz.

And again I’m probably jaded, but the kids I’ve seen lauded for fundraising raised multiples of $7000 and spread their projects across the country. Top schools see lots of these kids applying for every class.

So in my humble opinion, you won’t beat the odds that say you will not get into Brown.

I had to circle back because the irony hit me. Who should be helping assess the chances of college applicants, 17 year olds who don’t know what a CDS is?

Since this is my first semester at Brown, I was excited and went to see one of the admissions officers at Brown. She was telling me that Brown gives most priority on academics one have done in school, since goal of admission is to find match for Brown education, not good test takers !

Awesome! Thanks Samuel91!

Well gosh, then it’s really surprising they end up with so many good test takers. Coincidence I guess!

Penriquez, I think you have a good shot at Brown ED. Since you applied ED, that should already help you as is. Furthermore, I hate to say it, but the URM boost WILL help you whether you like it or not  . As waverly said, there are a LOT of capable Hispanic applicants (trust me, I know a few), but at the same time, by going at the ED route, I think that should help you tremendously.

Furthermore, test scores are NOT everything, regardless of what others say. I’d like to think that I am pretty good at math, being in Math HL, winning multiple math competitions, getting a 36 on my ACT math, an 80 on my PSAT math, as well as a 7 on math SL test, as well as scoring in the top three in my school AMC10 my freshman year.

But I only got a 730 on my SAT math section (2270 overall). So, in my opinion, I don’t think a single SAT score section is a make or break type deal, as it’s the application in the holistic spectrum that really gets chosen or rejected. At the same time, I too am an ED Brown applicant, so don’t take me for a pro college counselor like waverly.

Thanks so much, The Chance, I hope you get into PLME and if not that, just the College. Hopefully we’ll see each other in a few months! Good luck man!

Also, if someone could chance me for the other schools on my list in addition to Brown ED, that’d be great.
