Chance me for Brown, Penn, Duke, Dartmouth

Indian male boi looking to major in communications (at the schools that have it) or political science at those that don’t.

Upper Class (>170K)

West Coast (Not Cali)

GPA:

95/100 UW, 3.9 UW. Lots of grade deflation at my school, which is a very rigorous prep school that is in the top 70 nationally. AOs will recognize the rigor.

Rank:

N/A the highest GPA in the graduating class above me was 97/100, so I am definitely near the top. I would most likely be top 10%, and since the class is only 70 kids, only 7 people make up the top 10% lol

APs:

-Freshman year - none (school doesnt allow)

-Sophomore - Comp Sci A (5) (only 1 allowed sophomore year)

-Junior - Spanish Lang and English Lang (both 4) (opted to take two instead of three, which is the max anyone can take in a given junior or senior year)

-Senior - Chem, Gov, Calc AB, Micro (taking 4 to make up for junior year, took some bargaining with the admin team)

Overall a very rigorous curriculum for my school, but not the most rigorous. I believe that 3 or so kids have taken more APs than me.

SAT, ACT:

-SAT: 1530 + 22 essay, retaking in October (if need be)

-ACT: 34 + 9 essay, retaking in September (I feel I am capable of getting a 35)

SAT 2:

-Math 2 800

-Lit 620 (Probably not giving this one lol, might retake to see if I can randomly get a 700+ lol)

-Physics 780

ECs:

-Editor in chief of schools Yearbook committee (4 yrs), Through this helped establish and teach a middle school graphic design club to help supplement the yearbook.

-Co-President of admissions student ambassador program (4 yrs). There are some 100 students (school population is only 400) in the program. Basically, the student ambassadors give tours to prospective students, talk with prospective parents, promote the school, etc. As a co-president I manage the whole thing.

-President of social justice Club at school. We put on annual assemblies, workshops to promote cultural competency, invite well known speakers, do service projects. Received city-wide recognition in the newspaper for an MLK assembly I helped spearhead last year, (4 yrs)

-Co-President of Aerodynamic Engineering club (2 yrs). Basically, we build and fly planes, educate new members about plane anatomy, the physics of planes, etc. This is my stress-relief club, but I’ve helped it grow despite being in it for a relatively short time

-internship for the largest circulated English newspaper in India (think the Washington post, but for India) Published plenty of articles and blog posts under their banner. The paper is a (very) big deal over in India. I was offered a job to continue writing throughout my senior school year, which I have pursued, so I guess you could say I’m a freelance writer.

-Internship for congresswoman from my state starting junior year and into senior year. She has recently been getting a lot of national and international attention and has been making a lot of waves. One notable achievement: the internship was originally unpaid. However, since many students involved in the internship are low-income students from the local state university (I am the only highschooler), I helped lead efforts to make the internship a paid opportunity. I helped collect testimonies from all my peers and helped craft a letter to the congresswoman, asking for reimbursement and steady pay for our work. I am happy to say that our efforts worked out. Other than that, I phonebank, canvass, and do all that good stuff. (2 yrs)

-Founded an online magazine that takes submissions from students near the end of junior year. Decent amount of viewers (1 yrs)

-Played badminton for 10 years, nationally ranked, gold player, play in tournaments across the nation, invitationals although my ranking isn’t high enough to be that impressive, coach young players at a local clinic.

-I serve on my city’s government as a member of its youth council (4 yrs)

-Played piano for 15 years, lessons, play in churches, school performances, and the like. Basic stuff.

-Volunteer at local nonprofit twice a week. Tutoring Low income children. Have over a 100 hours while my school only requires 50 to graduate (2 yrs)

-Oxford tradition program at Oxford university, studying journalism and psychology (10th)

Awards (lol):

AP Scholar, National Merit Commended, Oxford Journalism Award for an article on homelessness. pretty laughable

Recs:

AP English professor. Got a B+ First semester, but she REALLY likes me. She knows the B+ was only due to my struggles with timed writing, as those were the only assignments I did poorly on, so she will likely go to bat for me

Calc Professor: Loves me, straight up said I am the best student in the class and one of the best calculus students she’s ever had

Additional Rec: Editor in chief of the newspaper in India I work for. He used to be a Harvard Professor, and is lowkey very famous, though AOs may not recognize his name.

Essays:

Should be fire. My college counselor said that I am the best writer she’s ever seen lol

Do you think this profile deviates from the asian stereotype?

bump

I think you are a strong candidate and you definitely have a shot. But with these schools you just can never tell. They key is to have some matches and safeties that you really love and to expect to end up at one of those schools. What other schools are you looking at?

Having just graduated from Duke, I can say your resume sounds similar to that of a lot of admitted students. The most helpful advice I can give you would be to highlight your social advocacy and gov’t work (since these are what make you stand out) and try to convince schools that they offer something special that will help you reach the next level of these fields.

If you want a hard number I would say ~30-40% chance of getting into each of these schools. A lot of it depends on how well you craft your application and market yourself. Also, a lot of it is, of course, chance. Then again, even with a 30% chance at each school, you’ll probably get into at least one (a 76% chance to be precise).

Wow! That means a lot! Thanks so much

You are a competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are great. Write amazing essays, apply ED, and you could get accepted to any of these schools

dude i fkn love your lowkey bragging it’s hilarious LOL
but in all seriousness you are a strong candidate for anywhere, which doesn’t guarantee you a spot anywhere but still-- you do indeed deviate from the asian stereotype in most aspects (piano for 15 years cmon), and im sure the former harvard prof can write you a letter of rec that will help a LOTTTTTTTT you really have the upper hand man congrats and good luck
from a fellow asian and college candidate
