Volunteering:
I have volunteered for an optometry organization for the past 2 years and I help to write lenses for people in third-world countries. I plan to go on one of their retreats to South America this summer.

Essay: I have a speech impediment (called stuttering) which I've battled throughout my whole life. I plan on talking about how I "found my voice" and became a liberal living in a conservative community where I felt comfortable voicing my opinion. Stuttering has shaped who I am as an individual and I would like to showcase how this makes me different from everyone else applying to these top schools. While I could dwell on the sad moments, painful memories and lost opportunities, I feel that my stuttering has helped me become more aware of the world and that has really helped me develop not only how I think and write, but who I am as a person. It's important to note that this really isn't the hackneyed story of "How I climbed the hill and overcame this..." There has been no triumph or fairytale ending, but rather I have had to accept my stuttering and will my voice out.

Recs: Will be excellent. My AP English teacher is almost like a friend to me and he has seen me struggle, but also realizes my great potential and ability to write. The other will be from my Latin teacher, who I've had since 7th grade, and has seen me progress in becoming more comfortable participating in her class.
