I wanna apply for either Engineer or Education study in Brown. Can anyone tell me the overall chance for me to get in? It’s kind of late to prepare for Brown at this point. I just got rej from Northwestern Engineer. Thanks!!
Your accomplishments seem solid. What will make or break your application is how your personality comes through. What do you do for fun, how do you interact with your friend group, what gets you intellectually excited? What is it about Brown in particular that makes you think it would be a great place to spend four years?
I am sorry about your rejection; I’m sure it hurts. That said, you need to try to figure out why NW rejected you and, if possible, avoid or correct the things you can.Unfortunately, some things just are the way they are and you can’t do anything about them.
- Do you require financial aid? Neither NW nor Brown is need blind for internationals. If you do need aid to attend, there is nothing you can do about it. The list of schools that is need blind for internationals is very short. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need-blind_admission You may have to drop down a tier or two in prestige to get in if you need lots of financial aid. If you haven't already done so, read everything on this site. https://www.internationalstudent.com/
2: How were your essays? International students, especially those whose strength is in the STEM fields, often do poorly on these. Above all, avoid painting yourself as a “type.” The ideal is to convince the reader and the admissions committee that if you aren’t admitted there won’t be anyone else in the class like you. You aren’t “fungible.” What do I mean? Well…if your essays say basically “I am a Chinese national who wants to study engineering in the US” tthen you haven’t given a college any reason why you should be admitted rather than any of the hundreds of other Chinese nationals who are applying to the same college to study in STEM fields. What makes you UNIQUE? What do you offer a college that other Chinese nationals who want to study engineering don’t offer? If you can’t give a college an answer to this, you’re not going to get into any college that has a lot of Chinese students applying to study engineering.
- Gibby posted this in a different college's forum. It's about deferrals, but I think some of the advice in it may be helpful to you in crafting your applications to other colleges. http://thecollegematchmaker.com/52-reasons-you-got-deferred-and-what-to-do-about-it/
Good luck!
