Hello! I’m a current high school senior and I’d really like to get into Cal Poly Pomona or SLO, but I’m not quite sure if I’d be accepted. I’m nearing the end of my high school years and I’m very nervous about being admitted into colleges…

AP Classes:
10 - AP Euro 3, AP Stats 3
11 - AP Bio 4, AP Psych 5, AP Eng Lang 3, AP US Hist 4
12 (Classes signed up) - AP French, AP Physics I, AP Calc AB, AP Econ, AP Eng Lit, AP Gov

The only AP Classes that I’m not taking that is provided for by my high school is AP Calc BC, AP Physics II, and AP Chemistry.
Otherwise, I’ve never turned down an honors course.

I’m currently in the top 5% of my high school.

The major I want to go into is Architecture because they’re some of the best schools I can hope for.

Here is the Freshman Profile for SLO: <a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions;
The SAT1* is the Critical Reading and Math score only.
I suggest you retake the SAT since Architecture is very competitive for SLO and Pomona.
You have a competitive GPA so getting a higher score on the SAT would give you a better chance at an acceptance.

Cal Poly Pomona is a Match with your current SAT
SLO: High Match/Low Reach but it could be a Match with a higher SAT.

This chart isn’t the easiest thing to read, but if you look at p. 9, you can see that in Fall 2014, SLO rec’d 1,034 applications for architecture, for a target class of 142:

Of course, they would have admitted more than 142 applicants–maybe up to 300? That’s just a guess.

What is your your M + CR SAT score? Neither Pomona or SLO considers the writing portion of the SAT. Your SAT score isn’t bad, but it wouldn’t hurt to try and get it higher (especially for SLO).

For SLO, grades aside, you will also need a compelling portfolio for architecture. SLO will be A LOT harder to get in than Pomona, given it is the #1 architecture school in the US. So don’t neglect your portfolio.

SLO is ranked highly, mainly due to being the largest program in the country, thus gets the most votes in the Design Intelligence ranking that everyone refers to. I think Pomona has better faculty though, since Los Angeles is the hot bed of architecture these days. I went through the program a few years back and can’t imagine not having seen my professor’s built work, visited their offices and worked on summer internships with them. SLO faculty on the other hand are professional professors, not much practice. Just look at the websites.

I’m about to start at Pomona this fall as a freshman, and admittedly, I’m no expert on admissions. But, as an non-local/non service area student with a 3.3 GPA, and only 2 AP classes and low SAT (1050) I was EXTREMELY surprised to get into CPP so I’d be even more shocked if someone with your stats did not get accepted in a second. Just my opinion though! Good Luck!

@DisneyRyan, I see your major was HRT which is not an impacted major. That explains why you got in with your stats. The OP is trying to get into architecture, which is the highest demand major at CPP. It has completely different admissions requirements than HRT.
