Chance me for Cal Poly Pomona, San Luis Obispo, Cal State Fresno, Chico and UC Merced

Hi everyone, I am currently a high school senior in California (State of bipolar weather I swear). I have appiled to all the state schools I am interested in as well as one UC. I hope to be an animal science major or a biology major.

Schools Appiled

Cal State San bernardino <---Safety school, Do not want to go local --

Cal Poly Pomona<---First choice, love the campus and hands-on approach

Cal Poly San Luis Obsipo

Cal State Chico<---Rep as a party school, not my taste. However I have never been on campus so I could end up liking it.

Cal State Fresno<---Never been, only know about the good animal science program

UC Merced<--Reccommended by a family freind, the campus looks gorgous and everything is new. However a bit of a cow town which I am fine with. Notable animal research center, although no animal science

Grades

Appiled with a 3.2 GPA
10-12 rank 165 out of 533
AP Class
Taken AP U.S History passed with an A, passed the ap exam as well
Currently taking AP Lit, AP Bio and Ap Gov/Econ (Yes, I know my senior year I should be having fun. Only class I am having issues with is AP Bio workload is crazy)

Member of GSA
Member of Game Design Club
Member of The Other Option CLub<-- Sucicide awareness/prevention club

Was a member of the varsity tennis team Freshmen year (Coach ruined the experience sad to say)

Volunteer Work

At least 200 hours of volunteering at my local animal shelter (worst experience having to bath an extremely drooly and sweet boarhound going to a rescue)

Was in Girl Scouts from 2nd grade up until freshmen year of High School. Numerous service projects under them.

SAT and ACT Scores

SAT: Reading 560 Math 390 Writing 490 Total 1440 <--Retook it in hopes of getting a better math score

ACT: EN 20 MT 19 RD 31 SR 23 CP 23 EW 21 WR 8 Total: 23<--Not retaking

History and English are my strongest subjects in school, science I am decent at. However math is the bane of my existance (Despite having a cousin who is a mathmatical engineer, an aunt who an articitect and a few doctors in the family)

Note not looking for pity points or sympathy. Just wondering if this would help my chances

I was born premature, three months to be exact. Weighing only a poumd and six ounces, I could fit into my dad's hands. The doctors were not sure if I would live or not so I was given my Final Rites (Roman Catholic btw) etc. My papa (Grandfather, grandpa whatever) is a doctor and constantly monitered my progress in the ICU, I was stuck in there for six months. I had a dedicated nursing staff as well as the occasional group of praying nuns to watch over me. Against all odds I survived and was able to offically come home (Dressed in doll's clothes still). After numerous tests (needles, needles, needles, I still have some scars) nothing mentally or physically wrong was found aside from a small hole in my heart

That hole would not cause any trouble inm y youth, however later in life it could possibly cause a problem. So I had heart surgery at age ten (Not Open Heart) and after nearly cracking my head open on the lovely hospital floor (I was not able to move at for a day due to having cuts under my hips and would cause bleeding if I moved. So ya stiff legs plus need to pee not the best idea) I was sent home after a week.

Presently I have not had to go any heart examinations etc for about three years. Although if I do have to go in for some reasons, my former nurses always come up and say hi lol.

Ya so hopefully my small little life story did not bore anyone too much. I was just curious if that would help buff up my personal statement if it came down to that.

So chance me please ^ ^

Your gpa is decent. Just try to increase your sat score. I’m not really familiar with California schools, but try to get near their average accepted scores. Your ecs are good too.
Good luck, I hope you get in.

Bump, Thank you Okok

Cal Poly Pomona: Reach
Cal Poly SLO: Reach
CSU-Fresno: Low match
CSU-Chico: Low match
UC Merced: Low match

Thank you Catria. Bump

Thanks for sharing your personal story.

Cal State San bernardino <Match

Cal Poly Pomona<—Reach

Cal Poly San Luis Obsipo - Reach

Cal State Chico<—Possible match. The campus is beautiful, and the administration is working hard to eliminate the party school reputation

Cal State Fresno<—Possible Match

UC Merced<–Possible match. Biology is the top major at UC Merced, so that may be a bit more competitive. The campus is very new, small class sizes.

Thank you Crizello, as for Chico I have not been to the campus so who knows. This website is really helping me worry less. Will boosting my SAT score improve my chances I just retook it.

Does it help that I am a Cali resident and the fact that I am taking difficult classes my senior year? I really would prefer not to do Cal State San Bernardino way to close to home and people I have known for years.

Also for Cal Poly I appiled for two options on majors my first being Animal Science and the other was just Biology.

Ok, you have a very compelling story. The problem with the Cal States is that there are no essay questions. Only the UC’s allow for those. I suggest you do a couple of things. If Cal Poly Pomona is your first choice as you state, call the school’s animal science department and ask if they grant interviews. Describe your special circumstance and ask how you can communicate your story. A personal interview may be the best way to accomplish this. Additionally, even though it is a long shot, apply to UC Davis as well. Great department and they allow for essay questions. The top schools for your major are Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly SLO (where my kid goes), and UC Davis.

Nevertheless, it really looks like Cal Poly Pomona is the best fit for you as it is close to your home and it is a really nice school. My suggestion is to find some way to meet the staff and decision makers at the school’s Animal Science Department.

“Does it help that I am a Cali resident and the fact that I am taking difficult classes my senior year?”

For CSU’s yes. And “rigor” always matters.

What is your “local admission/service area” school? That will count at most impacted campuses.

Thank you OsakaDad ^ ^, yes I figured my story would not matter much when it came to CSU. I have been on a tour at Davis, campus is gorgous etc, however academic wise I would feel that the atmosphere is very competative and that is not really my ideal setting. Thank you for the suggestion on the requesting an interview, I would have not of though of that. Will inquire around the Animal Science Department soon.

I have heard my story been retold thousands of times by family and after awhile I was just like meh ok whatever water under the bridge. If this helps my college choices then i will be happy to tell it from my personal view.

What do you mean by ‘referral?’ school not quite clear on that

^ Sorry, it’s called “service area”. See above.

My local admission school is Cal State San Bernardino, My high school is in Redlands.

However as an outreach,EAP (No idea what that is) Pomona is it.

Bump anymore chances?

Bumping once more
