Chance me for Cal Poly SLO please?

Hi, please chance me for Cal Poly SLO and if you can, recommend another CSU or UC that might be good for me.

Mandarin: A in both semesters

My UC GPA is 4.08

SAT I Scores: Highest Score together is 1900, (CR 600, W 600, M 700)
Highest CR score: 600
Highest Writing: 600
Highest Math: 720
SAT II scores: Chemistry: 670 (planning to retake)
Math 2: 670 (planning to retake)
Act: I plan on taking ACT in September, and so far on practice tests Ive received from 29-30.5, without Writing

Extracurriculars: I’ve been playing Piano outside of school as private lessons since third grade, so its been about 9 years now. I’m going to be a committee head of my school’s math club next year. Im working on becoming a lifetime member of CSF (California scholarship foundation?) I did a little bit more than 20 hours of service my sophomore year. Im currently doing volunteer service at a hospital near by, i plan on doing 40 hours or more there. I applied to NHS, but im not sure if ive been accepted.

Oh! and i am in the top 10% of my class. And became one of the top ten of my class based on my junior year GPA. (Straight As = 4.5 GPA)

I plan on taking AP enviromental Science, regular physics, AP Stats, AP econ, and world literature as my main courses next year.

So what do you think are my chances for cal poly slo? and if u can, please recommend other colleges, UCs or privates, that are good in engineering in general or electrical engineering. thank you ;]

Cal poly doesn’t look at extra curricular activities really.
Your gpa and test scores are all that matter, and admission depends on the pool of other applicants you’re competing against…So just keep grades up and scores high.

yeah, like ella said, pretty much all they look at is gpa and test scores. I wouldn’t be turned away from applying to a school you want to go to because other people say you won’t get in. I didn’t have awesomely high test scores or anything and I’m going to cal poly this year for biomedical engineering. again, keep your grades up and if you want to, retake the sat and act, and good luck :)

And, since you asked for recommendations to other schools, your extra-curricular activities and SAT subject tests will help you at the UCs and private schools. For the UCs you need to try and get those subject test scores to 700. I can see you being accepted to UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, probably UC Irvine, maybe UC San Diego. You would be a good candidate for University of the Pacific, several CSUs, maybe USC and a ton of other schools. UOP has a decent engineering program, as does USC. Unfortunately, unless you get an excellent financial aid package, many of them are private and expensive.

Keep your grades UP and try to improve on some of the test scores. Stick with your ECs and think about what you might write in your essays.

Good luck!

bump please reply to my thread ;]

Look into the GPA for Cal Poly. it is calculated differently than the UC GPA. You clearly took challenging classes and have a lot going for you. I am sure your GPA is good. Do retake the SAT tests and work on improving them. be sure to take the ACT. many people (girls especially and students from high achieving High Schools) seem to do better on the ACT. Also, Cal Poly prefers it to the SAT.

Cal Poly is a great choice for engineering (and other majors too)! It prides itself on having a very “hands-on” curriculum and great connections to the job market. The UCs are also good, but have less lab time for students and more lectures. You look like a candidate for most UCs. San Jose State also has an excellent engineering program and good connections after graduation. Of course i am biased towards Cal Poly because my son turned down some other great schools to go to CP for Engineering. The weather is awesome and the environment and people seem so positive and welcoming. be sure to visit schools and apply to many of them so you can have choices.

Enjoy your senior year and stay focused! Best of Luck! I think you have a very good chance of getting into Cal Poly SLO.

Hey im applying to cal poly too :] but for different major archE. (so we won’t be competing against each other haha). anyways cal poly gpa is from freshman year on and only academic classes count. so i dont think piano pe drama or health and safety count. Also, i dont know about your school but at mine chem honors and bio honors are not weighted. there just honors ( only AP chem and bio count). It doesnt matter because Cal Poly only lets you have 8 semesters of extra points for weighted classes. So if your redoing your gpa you got to add the grades of your semesters up (Academic only) then add 8 points and then divide by number of classes and thats your GPA.

Oh and you can try UCI or maybe UCSD (in my position since i did so poorly freshman year, UCs are easier to get in that SLO)

BTW does anyone know since asians, hispanics and blacks are minority at cal poly slo, do they get accepted easier?

Cal poly does not have an affirmative action program.

Just focus on keeping up your gpa and your sat/act score! That’s ALL you gotta do=)
Am I sounding too cliche?

^Just ignore my previous post although it’s partially true

You have a pretty good chance of getting in I would say. Just keep up what you’re doing. And this is a good site for looking up colleges that are well-known for engineering.
