Would being swim captain help my chances as well?

Please chance!
Cal Poly SLO and UCSD I guess

It is a major reach, both your GPA and scores are below their average.

^actually their sat is above the average…cal poly only does 1600 scale and this posters score is 1260. @cal poly, the middle 50% for reading is 530-630. and for math its 570-680. if you take the middle of those two ranges that’s 1205.

your sat score is fine but your gpa still makes cal poly a reach.

****i sort of made a mistake, i didnt realize that you are applying under engineering…the average for engineering is probably about 1300. my bad.

Cal Poly’s engineering freshman average SAT score is 1372, or ACT 31, and average GPA of 4.03.

Some of the CSUs like Cal poly SLO and SJSU have very highly regarded engineering programs but unless you live in their service area you have to have truly exceptional credentials to be competitive for admission. The OP would probably have a much better chance of acceptance at some of the middle and lower tier UCs than at Cal Poly SLO.

I heard that Cal Poly SLO prefers ACT over SAT, so if you get a strong ACT score, that’s really good! However, your GPA is low especially for a mechanical engineering major. Cal Poly SLO is really competitive in engineering, so I will also recommend this school as a reach. Are you applying anywhere else?

Honestly I don’t expect to get into slo even with a strong ACT score, but the other schools I plan to attend are
UCSD
UCB (Yeah i know LOL)
UCLA
USC
Georgia Tech

Really the only school out of this list I can see myself getting into is UCSD, but I’m already willing to go to a cc and hopefully transfer out in a year
