Cost Constraints / Budget under 50k a year

Schools
also looking for some private schools in-state and oos, location doesn’t matter as long as it isn’t too cold

  • Safety * UC Merced, SJSU(guaranteed admission if I apply math)
  • Likely * UCSC, UC Riverside
  • Match * Cal Poly Pomona
  • Reach * UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCSD, UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley

get many tiny scholarships if you’re worried about money imo

@Aydin_Uzun

This student has a budget of up to $50,000 a year. He is looking for instate CA chances. $50,000 will more than cover his costs at the CA publics as an instate student.

UC’s are test blind and only UCB will ask for LOR’s if you are selected. I am assuming that your SAT score is listed for possible OOS/Private schools which require the test or are test optional.

Here are the UC 2021 admit rates but not major specific. Data Science will be more competitive than Statistics and not all UC campuses will consider an Alternate major.

Campus 4.20+ 3.80-4.19 3.40-3.79 3.00-3.39
Berkeley 30% 11% 2% 1%
Davis 85% 55% 23% 10%
Irvine 60% 31% 14% 1%
Los Angeles 29% 6% 1% 0%
Merced 97% 98% 96% 89%
Riverside 97% 92% 62% 23%
San Diego 72% 25% 2% 0%
Santa Barbara 73% 28% 4% 1%
Santa Cruz 91% 81% 46% 9%

I think you categorized your school chances pretty well. UC Davis is between a Match and Reach school while UCLA/UCB would be High Reaches.

For OOS, University of Arizona or Arizona State might be options. ASU has a online merit calculator you can use to see if costs will be in budget: https://scholarships.asu.edu/estimator

You can also look at the WUE schools: Save On College Tuition | Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

For in-state privates, Chapman University, University of San Diego and Occidental college. You would need to run the NPC’s to see if they meet your budget.

I would add Cal Poly SLO since Stats has around a 40+% acceptance rate so a slight Reach but possible. You will need to calculate your SLO GPA (UC GPA capped plus 9th grades).

Best of luck.

For SJSU, math and applied math - statistics were some of the least selective majors last year, although thresholds are determined competitively each year: Freshmen Impaction Results | Admissions

For CPP, math was significantly more selective for non-local applicants than local applicants, although it looks like your CPP index would still have cleared last year’s non-local threshold. Of course, thresholds are determined competitively each year. Freshman Student Profile

You don’t indicate what kind of school you’re interested in, apart from the budget. As you’ve listed California publics which are all large institutions, I don’t know if your preference is for large schools or that’s just what is offered with Cali publics. Thus, the schools here may not be at all the right fit for you. But all of these private schools have a relatively higher percentage of students getting their degrees in math fields as compared to other similar institutions (as per College Navigator, put together by the federal government). Also, a number of these schools are members of the Colleges That Change Lives association and have been indicated with a CTCL.

Some private schools you may want to look into include:

  • Austin (TX) – CTCL
  • Birmingham-Southern (AL) – CTCL and had a tuition reset a couple of years ago
  • Centre (KY) – CTCL
  • Florida Institute of Technology
  • Gonzaga (WA)
  • Hendrix (AR) – CTCL and offers a flagship match scholarship
  • Millsaps (MS) – CTCL
  • Pacific Lutheran (WA)
  • Seattle (WA)
  • Trinity (TX)
  • U. of Tulsa (OK)
  • Whittier (CA)
  • Wofford (SC)

Some publics you may want to look into (most of which are WUE schools) include:

  • U. of Arizona
  • Colorado School of Mines
  • U. of Nevada – Reno
  • New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology
  • Oregon State
  • U. of Utah
  • Western Colorado
  • Western Washington

Thank you! I’ll look into these schools
