Chance me for CAS

Hi, I pretty much told myself I wouldn’t make one of these, but why not.

Nationality: Canadian
Ethnicity(seems to be kinda relevant): Asian

act composite: 31 ( 29 science, 30 math, 31 English, 32 reading, and a 26 writing but I was in the first test with Act’s new written response questions), this was in one sitting

Gpa: honestly have no idea. I went to a US school in grade 9 and had a 3.95 uw Gpa ( my lowest grade was a 91 in biology), but I did terribly in grade 10( moved back to Canada after spending years in The US) which means mostly B scores with a couple A scores sprinkled in. However grade 11 I got 6 A and 2 B. Grade 12 seems to be shaping out like 5 A, 2 B and maybe one C+( very low B as of now but I just screwed up a test). Note that there are no B and A plus and minuses in the Canadian grading system.

Course rigor: not much choice here in Canada, the only high level classes we were offered in grade 10 and 11 were honours physics, chemistry and biology
I only took biology honours.

Class ranking: N/A, no such thing as class rank in Canada

School: it is extremely competitive, ranked as the best public school in western Canada for multiple years straight. Beat out all the private schools in the UBC ranking but the more well known ranking put it as the best public behind a few private schools. Dunno if that helps for the US though

Ec: probably my weakest part, but I don’t think it’s too bad.

  1. Orphanage volunteer work in China (grade 9)
  2. Cross country club ( grade 10 and then got cancelled)
  3. Debate club (grade 11 and 12)
  4. Volunteering for an environmental protection group ( grade 10, 11, and 12)
  5. Student council grade representative (grade 12)
6.Reach club ( sort of like a trivia club, only in grade 10 because I got kinda bored)
  6. Volunteered for some city events, like marathons and conventions.
  7. Science development club (grade 12)

AP tests: 5 Ap Microeconomics, 5 Ap Macroeconomics, 5 Ap Chinese language and culture, 5 Ap world History, 3 Ap english literature( screwed up the multiple choice really badly), and I am planning on taking Ap human geography this year.

Recommendations: I submitted two. One is mediocre but not bad, the other is great.

Application essay: main common application is good, actual NYU one seems to radiate mediocrity.

Last bit of important information, I applied Ed 2 to Stern but I don’t think I’m gonna get in. Maybe this effects my CAS chances since I still get my results early? I’m not sure

I think that’s about everything, I didn’t take any Sat two tests. I honestly really want to go to NYU. It’s been my dream school for years. Any feedback or information about NYU would be appreciated, because if I am accepted I’m probably going to go, even if it is to CAS. Please forgive my poor grammar, typing on a phone is awkward and frustrating

Hey there! Stern seems like a stretch, but you have a shot at CAS. I’m not sure about your GPA, since there was a change in your high school education, but your ACT score and AP scores are definitely good for it.

Did you apply stern as your first choice and CAS as your second?

Yes I applied for Stern as my first choice, I guess I wanted to give it a shot. But I know that I also get my CAS decision early so I’m not sure if it will influence the outcome.

Apparently, according to some people on this website and at NYU, CAS doesn’t like it when Stern applicants put CAS as their second choice. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Apparently you get rejected automatically from CAS for doing that. Which is such BS because you and I are both great applicants for CAS, we shouldn’t get rejected for taking advantage of something the university allows us to do.

@dehca2016 classlena was pulling out false assumptions from nowhere; I’d ignore what he said if I were you. You are both solid applicants for CAS, and whatever you chose as your primary interest does not change that. It would be like if a school rejected an overqualified person who was competitive for Harvard admissions simply because they found out he wanted to attend Harvard. There’s no point in rejecting that person at all. The fact that you even PUT CAS as a choice shows your interest in the school, first choice or not.

I wasn’t aware that any such restrictions were in place. If it’s actually true that would be extremely unfair, I would have just applied Ed to NYU CAS instead. It seems really strange to punish a student that is only taking advantage of an application opportunity the school provides.

@RuleCanadia23

I agree. I would’ve applied ED to CAS as well. Whatever, nothing we can do now.
