Case Western is my top choice school and I really want to major in Bioengineering.
GPA: 3.3 UW, 3.75 W (Really competitive school with many hard classes)
SAT: 2110 (690 M, 700 CR, 720 W)
AP Classes taken: US History, World History, Lang Comp //// Lit Comp, Calc AB, Bio, Physics 1 (taking atm)
AP Scores: US His- 4, Macro- 4
Ethnicity: Asian
ECs: Four years of Robotics, Two years of FCCLA, volunteering at the library (130 hours), and volunteering at the local hospital (54 hours). Also part of Tri-M Musical Honors Society, and did Orchestra (it’s a class but it might help?) for three years (didn’t do it freshman year).
Many people are telling me I have a good chance but I’m not so sure because of my GPA. Also, would I likely get any scholarships if I do get in?
Take a read thru Admission Analytics for the Fox Parent by Vasavada. In this book, the author makes a good argument about Case Western as being an outlier school in the top ranks which has a high admission rate.
I think you have a decent chance. CWRU doesn’t publish the GPA of accepted classes so perhaps they don’t find it quite as important. Try to show interest if you can.
I think CWRU is a reach for you. They care A LOT about interest, and they are very selective, with a 36% acceptance rate as of last year. If you didn’t apply early, didn’t do an interview, etc., how will they know you are interested in them? Furthermore, your GPA is very low for the school.
This year, I applied EA for CWRU, and did the interview (which I thought went well). I got deferred with a 3.73 unweighted and a 33 ACT. If you look at the results thread for this year, many people with really high stats got deferred. It seems like Case wants people who meet their standards, and actually want to come to the school (demonstrate LOTS of interest).
Also, you said that Case was your top choice school. You haven’t done anything to show your interest in the school. (interview, applying early, etc.)
To the person who applied EA, did you notice that many people with stats lower than yours got in? With scholarships? They may have not gotten to your application, so getting deferred doesn’t mean that much. I do get your point, but acceptance data leads me to believe that I have a pretty decent chance. Certainly not a reach school for me (based on stats and EA acceptances).
I am relatively new to this forum and still a bit puzzled about ‘chance me’ thread. So I am not here to make a comment/reply to the original thread starter, other than to say “nobody would know”. My DD got accepted by CW with surprising merit $ with much lower ACT score than most of the students who got accepted based on the other threads. In comparing my DD’s stats to others who got accepted/applied, I really don’t think showing interest plays a huge role. What the admission office paid attention seems to be the EC’s/essays/Rec letters which as a whole really tell what kind of student she is and how passionate she is for certain things. I believe small schools like CW really pay attention not just #'s but to each individual’s characters.
My son was accepted EA with tons and tons of interest (lots of e-mails to his admissions officer) and two visits to campus (one for interview) and he is OOS. A 3.72UW and 33 ACT. He showed a 5 year passion for medicine, rec from a doctor he shadows as well as what he believes are stellar LOR’s. We as a family fully believe interest played a major role. He was awarded a 22.5K scholarship and grant money.
I honestly don’t know why I got deferred. My essay was strong (according to people that reviewed it), I’m pretty sure my letters of rec were good, my ECs were solid, and the interview went well. I took the most rigorous courses possible, given that my school placed many restrictions on taking APs/Honors. I’m positive I didn’t mess up anything on my application.
Also, on the Common Data Set, the Level of Applicant’s interest is ranked as “Important”. I may be repeating myself here, but I saw many people with high stats who got deferred like me. So, I don’t know what CWRU cares about the most.
@QuiteAverage90 I know how you feel. I got deferred from Northeastern, a school that is supposed to be for people with my grades (in normal classes) and scores. All I can say is that they might not have gotten to your application. It happens. Just don’t feel too down about it! Who knows, you might get accepted later with a scholarship!
I was accepted to Casewestern with no visit, interview, talk w/ admissions (35 ACT, 3.9 UW, 800 Subject Tests). While demonstrated interest may help, I don’t think it’s a crucial part of the application since your SAT/EC’s seem in range (GPA seems low just for schools of that caliber, but you said your HS was hard)
