I am applying to more schools than Choate but its by far my first choice so tell me your honest opinion of what my chances are…
so my negatives are
i go to a school that has no grades and no rankings
so when my application is compared to other kids who are top of the class at their schools i think it looks fishy
my SSAT score is on the low side. 99% (800) math, 72% verbal (694-701) overall 88 or 89% i dont remember its not the 95% i needed lol
positives:
i have a lot of math awards
AMC / 3 years in a row/distinguished honors
JHU CTY recommendation letter for scoring almost 800 on the math portion of the SAT in 7th grade
regional award certificates
recommendation letter from math olympiad coach for international math olympiad
my school counselor showed me recommendation he wrote for me and its amazing
i used to be a very serious athlete in 3 sports and have some national ratings but i quit (stupidly) last year to focus
on performance arts
i am an actor and a dancer and have performed in many professional venues in my town.
i play musical instruments for many years and sent some youtube videos of my performances
i also do debate and model UN but not at a serious level at all.
i live in CT and am applying as a day student but i am ok with boarding too.
i don’t need financial aid
Just so you know, Choate is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY competitive to get in, I hope you will get in but to be honest, i think you have a slim chance, have you submitted your application yet?Are you taking the SSAT again? Don’t close this chat until March 10th so that we can talk about our results, I am also applying to Choate. What other schools are you applying to?
Sincerely,
your responder.
Yes, I submitted. deadline was the 10th wasn’t it? I am not taking the SSAT again i am hoping my math credentials are enough and if not, hopefully, someone else wants me. I am also applying to Hotchkiss and Concord. What about you?
I am applying to like 16 schools, to tell you the truth I am VERY not confident about my applications. Me applying to Andover, Exeter , Hotchkiss, etc. I am not applying to concord
16? thats amazing that you are applying to so many. i burnt out after 3 applications lol. Best of luck to you!
Well, yeah, a lot of them are submitted through SAO
I applied to nine, but Choate is definitely in my top 3. I think we have quite similar stats. Our SSAT is about identical, i also got a 99% on math and 89% overall. I am also involved in MUN and debate, but not acting. I think you have a decent shot. Just stay positive and hopefully we’ll both have good news on this thread on M10.
Great work on AMC8, anything notable beyond? Only Exeter really cares, but every once in a while you see DHR on AMC10 and 12 from Choate, so your potential should work in your favor. I think they had a USAMO qualifier or two in recent years as well. Do you have dreams of USAMO? Can’t hurt to highlight those if you do! Best of luck and don’t give up on the AMC series when you get to high school!
Awesome about matching scores! Let me know what you hear on M10
Definitely dreams of USAMO. And thanks!
Have you qualified for AIME before?
AoPS has some great resources for math geeks (like me :D)
There are also lots of summer programs for math students, like Awesomemath, IDEAmath, etc.
Best one at your age OP is MathPath imo. At least look at their qualifying test - lots of fun problems this year. Good luck!
As a day student applicant, I bet your qualifications are ahead of your pack. I think you’ll get in. Let us know. Good Luck!
Thank you so much everyone! I will checkout MathPath and
IDEAMath. I am going to try AMC10 for the first time this year and if I do well then AIME.
@preppedparent is it harder to get in as a day student or boarding? I really don’t have a preference other than it’s cheaper for my parents if I commute lol.
It’s hard to get in either way, but I think its easier for day students because you are drawing from a more limited talent pool. For boarders, your drawing on students from all over the world, not within driving distance. They only take well qualified students either way, so if you get in, you are well qualified. Good Luck!
