Chance me for College of Engineering please!

I Want to attend College of Engineering to major in Computer Science.

In-State
GPA: 3.85
ACT: 31 composite 34 math, 29 english, 33 science, 28 reading 8 writing
Class rank: Top 10% for sure, maybe a little better, I'm not sure =/
APs: AP Computer science A: Score = 5 I plan on taking AP Calc and AP English

*My school only offers only 3 AP classes; I've taken the most rigorous courses possible.
*I attend a special magnet school for half the day every day for advanced math and science classes.
*I dual enrolled at a community college for my french classes.

EC's:
*4 different programming competitions in my junior year around the country.
*Tennis in school for 1 year, out of school for other 3.
*Long distance biking for 3 years

I know my EC's are pretty terrible. However, my school has no clubs or community service requirement or anything. I was kinda lazy, but I did the best with what I had.

I know these stats are above average for MSU, but I wasn't sure about college of engineering. Thanks for the chancing!

You’re definitely fine.

Your ECs are totally fine for MSU.

Yeah, you’re good.

At MSU you’re only applying to get into the school, applying to the College of Engineering comes later, after you’ve completed introductory courses. For example, you have to complete EGR 100, EGR 102, MTH 132, MTH 133, CEM 141, and PHY 183 with at least a 2.9 tech GPA to be admitted to electrical engineering (my major so it’s what I’m most familiar with). Depending on AP credit and math placement you should be able to do that after your first year or year and a half.

Ah ok, thanks. How is the computer science program there? I plan on majoring in computer science so I was just wondering how the courses and facility are.

Dang, I’m still kinda worried about my sucky EC’s. Do they care about them when your academics are good? Also, if I apply mid-late September, when should I expect my accept/reject letter?

MSU doesn’t focus on ECs if your stats are good like the OPs. If you’re on the edge stats wise, then they’ll pay more attention to your ECs.

I applied early Sept and got my letter beginning of Oct. Did you get the letter that said “apply by x date and you’ll get your letter by x date”? If not, there’s no way of knowing.

Ok, thanks! No, I haven’t gotten any letter from them except a giant pamphlet. I’m just hoping I hear back asap so I don’t have to apply to my safety school. I’m sure it’ll be fine.

both your GPA and ACT score are very good. MSU focuses more on academic achievement than EC’s. you’ll be fine, but still make sure you apply early. i applied last year at the beginning of september and received my acceptance at the beginning of october

What is your safety school? Also if you’ve already applied to MSU I think your chances of admission will increase a lot since you will be applying as ED, agreeing if accepted you will attend.
Your stats are great and I think you have a good chance of admission at MSU, and most universities.

WAIT! MSU has ED?!? I thought it was just rolling admissions…I don’t wanna agree to go if I get accepted, I’m still leaning towards U of M as my top choice. . .

My safety was gonna be Western Michigan University btw.

Yep, applying before Nov. 1st is part of MSU ED application.

Well I thought MSU has ED for those applying before Nov. 1st, I can’t find it on the website where I’ve read that information, but I remember seeing it.

Have you ever considered Kalamazoo College also? Right next to Western Michigan University to give the large campus field, but is sepereted by a block or so.

Yeah, I don’t think MSU has ED anymore. I finished the application, and it said nothing about ED, only rolling admissions. And yep, I’m applying to K college, but but their stats are better than MSU, so it can’t be a safety.

Yeah they don’t have early decision, I thought I remember seeing it somewhere.
But this link verifies everything:[Home | Michigan State University Office of Admissions](http://www.askadmissions.net/msu/aeresults.aspx)

^ This is what I got:

“Michigan State University does not have an early admissions policy. Students are admitted on a modified rolling admissions basis, meaning that as complete applications arrive they are comprehensively reviewed and decisions are generally given within 10-12 weeks.”

MSU doesn’t have an ED policy. You apply before Nov 1st for priority scholarships. However, no where does it say that you HAVE to go if admitted.

Ah ok thanks. And thanks so much for the PM Romani, it really helped. I’m still leaning towards U of M, but now I’ll definitely visit MSU if I get accepted.

1 more question. MSU doesn’t consider the essay too much does it, especially if your stats are above average? From their online app, they stated that it can only count as a positive factor, or towards scholarships but I wasn’t sure that was true. I was thinking about reusing my U of M essay because most of it fits the prompt.

I’m going to apply for msu college of engineering also for fall of 2010 going into computer science :)
