Chance me for Columbia ED Please?

I dunno if this is really a hook but it should be close..
I went to school in India for the first half of high school and yeah it was crazy tough there. I pulled off a 92% on the final nationwide examinations before moving back here, which was excruciatingly difficult painful. And then after moving back I pretty much pulled together the rest of my application. I'm a US citizen btw.

Academics:

GPA: 4.0 UW (I go to a US News top 50 public high school)

Rank: 65/400+ (this probably shouldn't be taken into consideration as my classes from india were weighted as normal classes. my counselor is writing me a note)

SAT:

first attempt: 1980 (M: 680 W:690 CR:610)
second attempt in October: 2200+ (M:750+ W:800 CR:720+)
(this is probably the case considering I scored over 2200 on the last 6 blue book tests)

SAT Subject Tests:
Math II: 750 (going to be retaking this along with physics and chem in November, expecting 800 in Math and 720+ in the other two)

AP:
Took 5 APs junior year:
5 AP Calc AB, 5 AP Stats, 4 AP Physics B, 4 AP US History, 2* AP Chem (I'm deleting this one, not sure what happened...)

Senior Schedule:
AP Comp Sci
(AP) Advanced Calculus
AP US+ Comparative Government
AP Literature
AP Biology
AP Micro+Macro Econ
AP Physics C
I will probably be taking health online and PE after school 2nd semester..
**Note: I really need to get in ED, since my grades are tanking, definitely not going to come out with a 4.0 this time.

Extracurriculars:
**Note: I did most of this in the two years I have been back.

-(11,12) Investment Club (President 12): We do a lot here, mainly learn about stocks & other securities and compete in a virtual stock market.

-(11,12) Washington Student Finance Association (Co-Founder and Vice-President): A student run group that promotes the field of finance to students in the local area. Basically, this organization is a network of finance/investment clubs. We've started about three or four clubs at other schools in the local area. We have a senior advisory board, comprising local professionals, as well as some corporate sponsors. We are also in the process of registering for non-profit (501 c3) certification.

-(11,12) Volunteering for a non-profit called Student Research and Development (Relations Manager):
This is a student run non profit group, that holds a 501c3 certification. The mission statement of the organization is to inspire students to learn more about science and technology, through the operations of an open workspace, with resources such as computer software, powertools, etc. I am in the Business Relations team; our job is to receive funding from corporations and organizations. I have written my share of grants, letter, etc. I also sometimes participate in the tech activities and I've definitely learned a lot.

-(9,10,11,12) Peer Tutoring: I have had quite a bit of experience with this, but only my volunteer hours junior and senior years have counted.

-Math Club (11,12)

-Robotics (11,12): Really helped cultivate my interest in computer science. I am interested in the ways computer science can be used in finance/investing.

-Washington Business Week: This is a summer program I attended between my junior and senior year.

-School Basketball team 9th and 10th grade (didn't have the time to play here, probably don't have the ability either haha)

-Tutor at Kumon Learning Center*** (have not gotten this job yet but this is something I want to do and I am sure I can get it)

-Total of 220+ hours of community service (only the hours from junior and senior year count)

Awards (seriously lacking on this part):
-AP Scholar with Honor
-community service award from my school for exceptional service

My intended major is Computer Science (2nd choice would be Financial Engineering), and I am trying to demonstrate my interest in computer science and finance in my application.

So I would really love to hear what you guys think my chances are for Columbia SEAS ED. If you can, please offer suggestions as well. Also please don't hesitate to tell me if you feel there are other schools that would really suit me. Thanks for the help!!

Your course load, gpa, and ecs are good
If you get high Sat/sat subject scores you seem to have a pretty good chance
The 2 on the ap chem test will be a little bad but hopefully they wont question about it

Overall you have a very good chance jumpshooter

yeah im thinking about deleting that score, hopefully they won’t get suspicious… thanks for your input! anyone else?

your course load is good for junior and senior year.
your sat scores may be a little lacking, though.
keep in mind that if your grades tank after you’ve been accepted, they can rescind their offer.
i’d say its a low-reach for columbia seas

Thanks for replying! Yeah I really hope my SATs come out as planned or higher. And I’ve heard that colleges (even ivies) really don’t rescind unless you literally fail a class. I’m probably just going to get a few Bs, hoping I only get one.

High Reach. SEAS is a tough school to get in, and your scores are not top. Definitely a good chance though if you can really pull your app together.

hmm is the Columbia ED SEAS pool really self-selective? I assumed the best engineering students would apply to other engineering schools like MIT. What sort of scores (SAT and subject tests) do you guys think will put me in the safe zone for Columbia considering the rest of my app?

Reach because of class rank. However, if your counselor mentions moving, have him discuss that you would have been in the top 10% if you got credits for honors etc since its nearly impossible to get in w/o top 10% to ivies.
Legacy should help. Get a 2200 and you should be have a pretty decent chance (low-mid reach)
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1016635-chance-me-will-chance-you-back.html</a></p>

thank you. i will try to get my counselor to mention something about top 10%. and truthfully I would’ve been top 10 in my school if my old classes had counted as honors (I do have a 4.0 with alot of APs). im really hoping Columbia doesn’t consider my rank or pretends it’s high…

buuuuuuump

I ended up getting a 2160 (700 CR, 710 M, 750 writing). This is lower than Columbia’s average of 2180 which includes URM’s, legacies, etc. Do you guys still think I have a good shot ED or should I improve my scores and apply RD? I’m applying to SEAS btw.

It now seems I have perfect GPA (with very high class rigour), good ECs, a half-decent hook and mediocre SATs?? I will try my best to get 800s on the subject tests… I would appreciate any feedback

Reach because Columbia’s ED rates are relatively high but your test scores are low given your ethnicity and the quality of applicants.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1022976-chancelot-stanford-ea.html</a></p>

Unfortunately living in India is not a hook. Many kids have lived in other countries. A true hook means you are an athlete being recruited, a minority, or one of your parents attended the college.

I think your idea of raising your score and waiting to apply RD is a wise one.

your SAT Reasoning Math scores are too low for an IVY especially since you are SEAS.

And being an Indian too, I feel a 92 on a ICSE/CBSE is mediocre. So your pre-grade 11 grades are not very good. However your 4.0 should fix that. And the note your counselor is sending will not help as there are applicants who get great scores in India also. By blatantly stating that you were not up to the task in India (due to competition) and are good in USA is not going to impress the Admission Board.

Your ECs are too 11th and 12th central. If you state that there are no opportunities to do some activities in India ( ie your 9 and 10), you would seem pretty foolish. Lets just hope the colleges look past that.
Best of luck.
