Chance me for Columbia ED?

SAT I: CR770, W770, M680 - 2220. This was all in one sitting BUT it was the third time I took the test and I accidentally submitted my first two scores which were 1940 and 2050. D:

SAT II: Lit-750, US History-740

GPA: 4.0, unweighted

APs: AP Euro (4), US (5), Lang (5), Lit, Macroecon, Calc, Pol&Gov

ECs/Jobs: Orchestra (President & Concertmaster), Chamber Orchestra (helped found it - after-school), Tutor @ Kumon Learning Center, Volunteer @ Neighborhood House Summer Program & Tutoring Center (during the school year), Model (local fashion shows, catalog, etc), then some more meaningless things: Calc Club, Link Crew, Competitive Speaking (9th & 10th grade), Physics Club (if I even include that)

Honors: Eh, mostly insignificant. AP Scholar, Honor Society, Girls State Delegate, etc

Hook: None, really. I'm a half-asian, half-white female...but that doesn't mean much.

Thanks!!!

Well, Columbia’s ‘used to’ valedictorians with SATs 2300+, needless to mention impressive ECs. A 2230 may cut it at Columbia, but I would suggest a ~2300.
What APs are you in this year? No self-studies?
Personally, I think some of your ECs are good, but overall, I wouldn’t say they’re superb for Columbia. If you can write a good essay with a letter of rec about/from the band stuff, it’ll pull you through.

Columbia ED- High reach.
I’d suggest Cornell, UChicago, Dartmouth, Northwestern, and Brown, all schools that have much better chances for you.

Rest assured, I’m pretty sure the ivies are looking for some pretty models for their otherwise stereotypically ‘plain’ student body ;)

Lovely. Just what I want to be, a pretty face.
& I can’t get a letter of rec from orchestra because my conductor is totally psycho. He decided we weren’t having elections & this girl who was of the same religion as him was going to be President, but luckily my classmates didn’t go for that & forced him to have elections.
But thanks anyway, heh. I want to stay near a big city though & preferably one with great financial aid.

I’m taking 4 APs - the last 4. Macroeconomics is through Johns Hopkins Uni because they didn’t have enough APs at my school. I couldn’t take a foreign language AP because they dropped the German program after my 3rd year of it.

Then perhaps UChicago should also be one of your top choices? UCLA/UCB would also be in your top choices. Though I doubt the latter two have decent financial aid these days…

Anyone who says a 2230 isn’t good enough for Columbia is kidding themselves. Naomikt: your scores are absolutely there. Now it’s just a question of whether your writing presents you in as compelling a light as your GPA / SATs do.

imo the modelling thing will get you in. you seem qualified otherwise though math/cr scores are on the weaker end (me too). otherwise gpa is solid and ecs are eh but the modelling thing makes up for it

Oh, that gives me hope…thanks guys. I’m just brushing up my essays right now & my short answer discusses modeling…I don’t know why modeling would get me in, but it did provide some very interesting material for essay prompts. :stuck_out_tongue: But my CR is weak?? A 770 is weak? I agree on the math though…I just suck at it in general.

And yeah I actually looked into UChicago and I am very intrigued by it. :)

bumpp. anyone else?
also possibly chance me for other schools?
NYU, UC Berkeley, Barnard, UPenn, UChicago, and Georgetown.

I do agree that Columbia is an uphill battle for all. You have good stats, but so do most who apply and during the ED round most accepted will have hooks.

What I will take exception to is Honorlion’s incorrect statement that his list will be easier for you or anyone. Brown takes roughly the same percentage of applicants as Columbia, Dartmouth 2% more, Cornell CAS about the same. These schools have similar applicant pools. The differences are minor and change year over year.

Columbia requires all scores anyway :P

I think you have a great shot, as long as your writing is good :)
