Chance me for Columbia/others? I'll chance back!

Hey everyone, I’ll be a senior next year (Class of 2016!) and thought I’d finally do one of these chance threads. I’ll keep it short!

Stats:
GPA: ~4.2 W (school doesn’t do unweighted)
SAT: 2370 (800 CR, 770 M, 800 W) (1 sitting)
SAT II: 790 US History, 790 Lit
ACT: didn’t take
AP: haven’t gotten the scores back yet but probably 5s on US History and English, 4 in AP Calc AB, and a terrible one for Physics lol
PSAT: 231 (qualified for National Merit Finalist next year b/c I made the cutoff!)

ECs/Awards:
Principal violist of school orchestra for 4 years, All-State Orchestra for 1 year
Vice President of Chamber for a Cause (volunteer orchestra group I helped start) for 3 years
Editor-in-Chief of school literary magazine for 2 years
Speech and Debate since freshman year, won a few awards (VP of Membership for 1 year)
Nearly all honor societies, including NHS (secretary of Music Honor Society next year)
Avid writer, many small writing awards, published in Adroit Journal (will become an editor this summer)
English Tutor for two years
Bryn Mawr Book Award (I heard book awards look nice?)
Girl State 2015
Will do Music Therapy volunteering at a NYC hospital this summer, and I went to CTY for Chemistry two summers ago (though that may not be that impressive lol)

Other:
I’m an Asian girl from NJ lol (biggest anti-hook :)>- )
I have always taken honors and AP courses. Junior year I took 4 APs (Calc AB, Physics, English, APUSH) and in senior year I will be taking 6 APs (Spanish, Econ, Stat, Psychology, Environmental Science, English).
Letters of Recommendation from English, History teachers and Guidance counselor, they love me so they should be good!
I’m getting started on my essays this summer and will do my best to make them amazing lol
I’m afraid my biggest setback is my GPA which is on the low side for top colleges

Chance me for any of these schools: Columbia (my top choice atm), UPenn, Brown, Cornell, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Northwestern, UCLA/Berkeley

Columbia -(might get in ED) Reach
Brown -Reach
Cornell, Northwestern, Penn -low reach
JHU and Gtown -high match/low reach
UC’s and NYU -match

Chance me back!

You will have to read thru the comments bc of my updated ACT score and add ons to college list!

thank you @tomatoes124 ! i chanced you as well

Thanks!

Damnnnnnn sonn that is quite the steller SAT score! I’m jealous haha. AND HIGH FIVE FOR ORCHESTRA!

UPenn = Very possible (My friend got in with a 2210 SAT score, and he was asian. His EC’s were on par with yours)
Brown, Cornell = Never too sure, but I’d say reach for both bc/ Ivies can be weird haha.
NYU = match
Johns Hopkins = low reach, but very possible (You have strong scores). Same with Georgetown and Northwestern,
UCLA/Berkeley = Very solid match, you’ll VERY LIKELY get admitted

Good luck!!

@lonelyowl orchestra 4 life!! thank you sm

Hi again!

Well, first off, your credentials quantitative and qualitative wise are quite stellar! Great job! However, I am not sure how high the GPA your school goes up to (I assume it is out of 5.0?) but you need to be in the top decile, or preferably, the top 5% of your class. Your chances are phenomenal at these schools, but then again…admissions are slightly random? Lol.

Columbia - Reach, but better chance if you go ED
UPenn - Reach, but again, better chance if you go ED
Cornell - Low Reach
NYU - Low Reach
JHU - Low Reach
Georgetown - Reach
Northwestern - ??? I don’t know much about this school, sorry!
UCLA - Low Reach*
UC Berkeley - Low Reach*

*I honestly don’t know that much about the UC schools so this is my guess haha.

Best of luck with admissions and keep us posted with results!

Published in Adroit Journal? That, coupled with your high test scores, makes you an outstanding applicant. You must be a really good writer, and I’d be surprised if you didn’t get into one of those schools. I think columbia, upenn, and brown are reaches just because they are ivied but I still think you have a great shot at getting into them, Cornell Hopkins, gtown, and northwestern and low reaches and the others are match to high matches. Also from what I’ve heard book awards aren’t really anything too special, I could be wrong! It’s just most of the stuff I’ve seen says that, but either way I think the rest of your ec’s and scores are great, and can you not estimate your UW gpa? Because someone could have a 3.3 UW gpa and a 4.2 w gpa or a 3.9 UW gpa and a 4.2 w gpa, so there is a lot of leeway. I think most colleges look at UW gpa over weighted gpa so estimating that from your grades might be a good thing to do. Honestly with the rest of your scores I would say anything above a 3.7 would still be great, obviously a 3.8 or better would be preferably though.

We are extremely similar candidates (check out my thread), though your test scores are waayyy better. So I think you have a really good shot! Good luck.

Your SAT scores are great, that being said, you are looking at very difficult schools to get into. NYU, Georgetown, Cornell, UCLA, JHU I think you can get into, no problem, especially NYU and Cornell. It is possible that you get into Brown/Columbia/Penn, but I have noticed in the past couple of years, many qualified students have been rejected from these schools. But you will be just fine and whichever school you end up choosing will be great.

Great stats. All of the schools you listed are extremely difficult to get into, but I think you have a great chance at all of them. You should definitely get into NYU though. Chance me?

Wow, that SAT score is very impressive. I also wouldn’t worry about your GPA. It is strong and not the only thing they will be looking at.

Columbia- reach ( i think it is probably a reach for most applicants)
UPenn- reach
Brown-reach
Cornell- low reach
Georgetown- high match
Northwestern- high match

I don’t know enough about the UCs to give you any reliable information.

You’re a great candidate, anywhere.
I’d say Columbia, UPenn, Brown, Georgetown are reaches, just because of nature of the admissions there. You’re certainly qualified for them.
Cornell, Northwester, John Hopkins would probably be Med/Low Matches. NYU would be a safety. I don’t know much about UCLA and I don’t want to mislead you.
Overall you are an excellent candidate and you will certainly get in somewhere awesome.
Good luck!!

thank you @ptkid16 , @nicoleK98 , @emilyskates , @poliscinerd12316 , @WellOkay ! i’ll chance you guys back

Hey! Other Columbia early applicant for class of 2020 here. You’ve got excellent credentials. Score-wise, I think you’re qualified for all of these schools, and your excellent extracurriculars put you over the edge most definitely for all of the non-Ivies on your list (NYU, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Northwestern & the UCs) and put you in the competitive pool for the Ivies (particularly Cornell & UPenn will probably be lower reaches), and I think you definitely have a strong shot at getting into Columbia!

Could you chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1789524-chance-me-for-a-chance-back-columbia-ed-etc.html?new=1

I think your a good applicant for all the schools you’ve listed. But unfortunately, as with all Ivies, its just god essays and a bit of luck. I think you’ll probably get into one for sure, your academics are great and you have some really solid extra curriculars. I think you stand a really good chance with most of the schools though, even if they are reaches. Just work on your essays, and I think you’ll get in. Good Luck!

Test scores are good, GPA will hurt you, but for your college application I think it would be better for you to concentrate on your literature awards rather than your orchestra accomplishments as you asian so it could work against you. Columbia and Brown are reaches, Cornell is a reach/low reach, JHU is a low reach, Gtown is a high match. Best of luck to you with your college applications!

Hi again! I think that you have a very impressive application, with many great credentials. I think you have fantastic test scores, and very solid extracurriculars. As for the GPA, if I am assuming correctly that it is a 4.2/5, then yes, it is on the lower side, but improvement senior year will help of course. As for the chances, Columbia ED - 20-25%, UPenn - 10%, Brown 15%, Cornell 20%, NYU - you’ll get in  , Johns Hopkins 20%, Georgetown 15%, Northwestern - 20%, (I don’t know much about the California schools, sorry). Those percentages are based on an assumption that the GPA will go up a good amount. I would strongly recommend adding a few safeties to your list and perhaps cutting a few of the reaches. I know many applicants feel the need or believe that if they apply to many top schools, they will get in to at least 1 or 2, but just recognize that it is a lot of work and it is better to make a few reaches count with stellar supplements and essays than to write mediocre ones for many schools. I would love if you could chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1796275-what-do-you-think-of-my-chances-are-at-these-universities.html#latest Good luck with your application.
