Nevertheless, 2 solid teacher recommendations. Trip to Six Flags with Senior Class. Top 40 percentile of Ryken class rank. High School is Xaverian, a presitigious all boys institution. I plan on getting a 1800 SAT should I get lucky on test day. Right now averaging about 1700 per practice test. Well known in school. ACTs 25. I take rigorous courses for a ryken student such as adv. trigonometry, English composition, and equity living enviornment. 1 AP course in bio, scored a 2 because i wasnt feeling well. Do you think college board can let me slide? SAT IIs: Math II 650, Bio 510, French (w/ listening) 670. Ethnicity: American Indian. PLEASE HELPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHANCES AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY?! (MY DREAM SCHOOL)

Not looking good…just being honest. 97% of last year’s accepted Freshman class graduated in the top 10% of their class. Graduating in the 40% is simply not high enough. In addition, your SATs scores need to be at least 2100 or better. ACT needs to be 31 or better. Here is the breakdown of the 1st year students accepted in 2010:

Eep. I hate to say this but your chances aren’t looking so sharp. GPA and SATs are low compared to Columbia’s usual admittance statistics. The 1800s on the SAT won’t help much either…you need at least an 2100+ for a solid SAT score for Columbia. Why didn’t you try for something like QuestBridge? I’m not saying that you shouldn’t apply, if you really like this school, go ahead and apply, but don’t get your hopes up. I’d suggest looking at alternatives. If you really want to go to Columbia, try to get a 4.0 GPA @ the first year of college then transfer out.

Compare yourself with last year’s applicants:

Unfortunately, your grades and scores are significantly below the standard that Columbia appears to accept. I think that Columbia would be a far reach for you.

If you haven’t done so already, I would recommend that you have a chat with your guidance counselor to come up with a target list of schools.
