To give some sort of reference, i was in my guidance counselor's office and she told me she thought that my high school had won the lottery by getting to have me as a student.

My essay is about being raised by lesbians and how it's affected me in my acceptance of my family and of myself.

200 + Volunteer hours at a pediatric hospital and a regular hospital

You seem like a good candidate! Great grades. However, be careful with your essay. There were 3 seniors in my schools class of 2014 who wrote about being raised my gay parents. And that’s out of only 100 kids lol. So I reccomend being careful with that. A lot of kids are starting to write about that, so try something super unique. If it really is that central to your identity, then go for it, but if you are using it to distinguish you from other kids, it probably won’t work. For example, a kid in my school wrote about how he wears a white tee shirt ever day to schools because it gives him a fresh start. And he got into Stanford! So it only takes small things  good luck!

Columbia is a reach for everyone. That said, your EC’s are good, URM is definitely a hook. But you really need to get the ACT higher.

I partially agree with the above poster on your essay. Rainbow is the new black, in particular in states like NY that have legalized same-sex marriage. Parents weekend at my school seems like every 4th student has 2 gay dads or 2 gay moms. I’m not saying don’t write about it, but you really would need to make it different. Some uniqueness could be derived if you biological mother’s partner is not AA and the development of you as a person growing up in an interracial household. If both moms are AA, there could be a spin on growing up in an environment in which, by race/ethnicity, African-Americans are the last ones to jump on the same-sex marriage bandwagon.

Good luck.

could i make it more unique by instead of talking about my acceptance of it, talking about how being raised by two women has made me feel empowered as a women to have such strong role models? or is that not unique enough too? too cliche?

Even less unique IMHO.

Perhaps you can try writing about a specific moment that is unique to your mothers lifestyles. Something that affected you profoundly, rather than talking in general about your childhood

its so hard to get into but u seem solid
