Chance me for computer science please!

Hey guys, probably my first or second post on the forum, was wondering if you guys could chance me, and maybe point me in the right direction in terms of the school I am applying to (Sorry if I miss anything, not really sure how this works).

Background:
Caucasian, first generation (family is from Russia)
I go to a public school which is mildly competitive
I will be the second person in my family to go to college, my mom went to a state school while my father went to college in Russia.

Schools I am applying to:
(In state)
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
UC Los Angeles
UC San Diego
UC Santa Barbara
USC
(Maybe) UC Irvine

(Out of state)
Univeristy of Washington (Seattle)
University of Oregon

My Scores:
UW Gpa: 3.76

SAT: 1880 (1st attempt)
1770 (2nd attempt)
(I will be taking it again in October, and I expect my score to go up)

Subject Test: 690 Math II
670 US History

I took AP Computer Science and AP US History junior year
I will be taking AP Calc, AP Government/Honors Econ, and Honors Spanish this year

EC's (They're pretty weak, I know):
4 years of varsity tennis

I played guitar for around 6-7 years before quitting before junior year to focus on grades, and I received a certificate of merit from ABRSM if that counts for anything

I participated in Model UN and the Math club in the 10th grade

I have been working for my former tennis coach since the end of 9th grade every single weekend and on and off during the summer at his tennis clinics, where I help out and coach kids from the ages of 6-13.

Be honest with your answers and tell me if I missed anything. Thanks!

Read point 1 of <a href=“Before you ask which colleges to apply to, please consider - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1621234-before-you-ask-which-colleges-to-apply-to-please-consider-p1.html</a> .

UC admission profiles are at http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/profiles/</a> , but computer science/engineering is popular, so it may be more selective than the campus overall.

I would eliminate USC off the bat with that SAT score.

Apply to some non-impacted CSU’s since your SAT scores are not competitive for the listed schools.

aunt bea, I just checked the Freshman Profiles for Santa Cruz, and my SAT is 100 points above average. Am I missing something?

Also, what do you think about my chances for the out of state schools?

Santa Cruz, Irvine, Oregon all seem like good matches. Get your SAT higher (2100+) and the rest could start to to be matches too.

Chance me at: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1675275-chance-me-for-ed-tufts.html#latest</a></p>

Ace: can you afford OOS schools?
You might be okay for Santa Cruz but your SAT went down from the first testing, so they might double check that.

aunt Bea: I can afford OOS, but not “conmfortably”, if that’s the right word for it. But what difference would it make if

You should calculate your UC GPA and post it. Also add Cal Poly Pomona to your list (and perhaps a few other CSU’s). .

Ace, most students are above the range and your scores of 1700 to 1800 are just not competitive.

What you are missing is that there are some regional feeder schools, whose students are accepted with guaranteed admission, by the local UC, have articulation agreements between the two entities. Those students’ stats are included and sometimes bring the averages down. To be competitive, your scores need to be above the range.
If you apply to UW, you will be paying full fees. It’s a public school and their dollars go to their students first.

MLM: My UC GPA is 3.77. I’m also applying to Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State and possibly San Jose State, I just forgot to list them for some reason.

aunt Bea: Thanks for the explanation, it cleared a lot of things up.

UC’s are very GPA focused and a 3.77 with a low SAT will not be competitive for Computer Science except possibly UCSC/UCR/UCM. Cal Poly SLO was ridiculously competitive for CS this past year so I would say a reach. SDSU is a match and SJSU would be a high match. Calculate your EI (UC/CSU GPA x 800) + (SAT CR + SAT Math). See how you compare to the EI indexes from this year, see link: http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-10079.11705.html</a>. If you do not meet the EI, you may be accepted by SJSU but as undeclared. You might want to consider Software Engineering as an alternative major.

FYI: Younger son had UC GPA 3.73 and ACT 31 for CS. Accepted to UCR only from the UC’s (did not apply to UCSC or UCM). Accepted to SJSU as Undeclared. Will be attending SDSU this Fall.

UW/UCLA/UCSD/UCB/SLO: Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Low Reach
UCSC/SJSU: High Match
SDSU/U of Oregon: Match

I would add Cal Poly Pomona and CSULB for matches.

Why don’t you apply to private schools in California? Why state schools when you don’t get the benefit of paying low tuition cost. What about Santa Clara University?

gumbymom: I’m actually interested in software engineering, but when I was starting my UC app, I only saw CS and “Computer engineering”. Is software and computer engineering the same thing?

Dr Google: I’ve heard a lot about Santa Clara. I’m guessing it would be a target for me?

Put a laser-like focus on your SAT. There is little you can do about your GPA now, but your SAT score can dramatically be improved. Break 2250 and you will get into most of the schools you listed above. UCLA seems out of the picture at the moment, but it doesn’t hurt to apply.

Remember, the SAT is NOT an intelligence test. It is all about the amount of effort you put in. That means, the more your work towards it, the higher your score will be. Its as simple as that. So make it a priority. Use the strategies listed on prior cc posts, and aim for a 2400. Take at least one to two practice tests a week.
