State: NH

Income: under 90k a year

National Merit Commended (if that matters at all)

If a course has been offered in my school at the honors level, I've taken it.
AP Comp Sci: 5
AP USH : 2 AHHHHHHH! Got a B+ in the class.

Next year: AP Physics B, AB Calc, AP Econ, AP Lit, Honors Spanish 4, and two random art classes (I need to take some art or I won't graduate haha)

I go to a pretty well known boarding school

I've played JV Football for 2 years, JV Track for 2 years, JV Nordic Skiing for 1 year, JVXC for 2 years, and probably tennis next year, not sure about JV or V.

What are my chances at:
Cornell CoE (ED)
Harvey Mudd
UNH
JHU
CMU
Union
Duke (Pratt)
Wash U
Vanderbilt
Bucknell

Oh and I have like 400+ hours of community service

Cornell- reach
Duke- reach
CMU- reach
JHU- reach
Wash U- reach
Vandy- reach
Harvey Mudd- reach
Union- not sure
Bucknell- high match
UNH- safety

Your GPA is a little low for the top-tier schools on your list and the GPA is the most import stat of all. Your ACT is really good, particularly for the first time. Your RA experience is a really cool thing to have but you could use some more sizzle to your EC’s. IMO, you have too many top-tier schools for your GPA.

ouch. how can I add some more “sizzle”? also, I have been studying tons for the ACT, so hopefully it will go up at least a point

link to your chance thread?

btw my college counsellor chanced me based on our schools results… what do you think?
Cornell CoE (ED): reach
Harvey Mudd: reach
UNH: in
JHU: high match
CMU: high match
Union: in
Duke (Pratt): reach
Wash U: high match
Vanderbilt: match
Bucknell: low match

1finite, your counselor and I aren’t that far off. I would certainly concede that he has more expertise than I do in this area. What he’s calling “high matches” I am calling (probably low) “reaches”. I just feel that CMU, JHU, Vandy, and Wash U are extremely competitive and that your GPA could hurt you at these schools so I do not feel that they are matches, low or high-- particularly Wash U and JHU. By “sizzle”, I meant to show specific length of time on each CS area, like you did on your athletics- that’s all- not a big deal. Good luck!

Thanks! 10char

bump10char

Not bad. Cornell is a bit of a reach but you are definitely a match for some of those schools on your list.

I have a friend that graduated this past year, he got into Vandy with stats similar to yours. I think he had a slightly higher GPA, though. Help me out???

thanks guys

What is your rank?

My school doesn’t rank

AP USH : 2 AHHHHHHH! Got a B+ in the class.

This somewhat suggests grade inflation but seeing that your high school is highly ranked and very competitive you have a good chance.

Cornell CoE (ED)- 25-30%
Harvey Mudd- 25%
UNH- no clue
JHU- 10%
CMU- 15%
Union- no clue.
Duke (Pratt)-8%
Wash U- They waitlist a lot of people, so no clue.
Vanderbilt- 10%
Bucknell- 40-50%

Also, you might want to edit what you wrote about your internship…
CC is a public forum and it might come back and haunt you when you apply.

Maybe I am being overly paranoid but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck!

I think you have a good chance, especially for Bucknell. Your ECs are OK and your high school is a competitive one. Duke matches less than others.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/966826-please-chance-me-i-really-need.html

chance me back!

It’s not grade inflation, I just did really bad on the AP test and really well on the final paper and exam in the class (3 weeks later)

Thanks for the chance

BTW some stats from my school:
avg accepted GPA, SAT/2400, ACT

Vandy: 3.4X, 20XX, 26
CMU: 3.5X, 20XX, 29
JHU: 3.5X, 20XX, 27 (I have the highest ACT score by far for people who have applied)
Cornell: 3.5X, 19XX, 28
Wash U: 3.6X, 21XX, 28

Cornell’s results are a little skewed because a lot of wrestlers, basketball players, and lax kids have been recruited, and JHU’s are because a lot of people apply into their premed program and get rejected

Oh, I apologize.
I am glad to see that you rocked one of those post AP assignments!
After APs I am too tired to think about anything, haha

Good luck.
Are you already working on your essays?

yup! luckily a teacher at my school worked in an Ivy league admissions office, so he can read over my essays and give some great pointers once school starts
