Chance me for Cornell, NYU, Johns Hopkins, etc.

I’m a rising high school senior trying to figure out where I will be applying to college.
The schools I’m considering at the moment are:

  • American
  • BU
  • Brandeis
  • Cornell
  • Johns Hopkins
  • UMass-Amherst
  • UMich
  • NYU
  • Northeastern
  • Pitzer
  • Syracuse
  • Tufts
  • Vassar
  • UW-Madison

High School Achievements:

  • 4.3 weighted GPA (3.9 unweighted)
  • ACT score: 32 (superscore: 33)
  • 9th in my class of approx. 400
  • in a highly competitive gifted program
  • taken 9 APs so far (English Lang & Lit, Bio, Human Geo, APES, APUSH, Comparative Pol, US Gov, Physics 1) and I plan on taking 6 more next year (Chem, Psych, Stats (or maybe Calc AB), Macro Econ, Micro Econ, French)
  • Key Club (4 years)
  • NHS (2 years)
  • JV Tennis (2 years), Varsity Tennis (2 years)
  • French NHS
  • Volunteer at a local science museum (4 years)
  • Worked a local dermatology office last summer.

I’m thinking about majoring in Premed or biology.

Please let me know if you think I have a good chance of getting into the schools listed above. Thanks

@caitlinb598 Hey! I’d say your scores are great, but your ECs lack leadership (being the captain, president or editor on an EC), which is something many of these top-tier schools are looking for.

Overall:

  • American = safety
  • BU = match
  • Brandeis = match
  • Cornell = high match/low reach
  • Johns Hopkins = low reach
  • NYU = match
  • Syracuse = safety

GPA: very good overall. anything above UW 3.85 is very good.

ACT: 32 is average for some of those colleges. Only ECs make 32s stand out.

Rank Top 2.25% is very good. not much difference in 1% and 2%

AP: Very rigorous. Nice work

EC: This is where the problem occurs. I don’t see much passion but I do see a sport, academic club, volunteer, and work positions.

  • BU: Match
  • Brandeis: High Match
  • Cornell: Low Reach
  • Johns Hopkins: Low Reach
  • UMass-Amherst: Safety
  • UMich: Match
  • NYU: Match
  • Northeastern: Match
  • Syracuse: Safety/low match
  • Tufts: High Match
  • Vassar: High Match/Low Reach

BTW – if you’re looking for a merit scholarship, American may be the place to go.

I have a friend who had a 1350, 93 average and decent ECs and scored a $20,000 scholarship at AU.

thanks guys! do you think a really good essay or good rec letters could make up for my lack of EC’s?

Yep, I think so! And your stats are great, so that’s a big thing. Also just wanted to point out you can’t major in Premed, but you can major in Biology and be on the Premed track

I think schools like American, BU, NYU, and Syracuse are solid matches. Everything else is definitely within your reach though!
