Chance me for Cornell, Vanderbilt, USC, UCLA, & U of M

Chance me for Cornell, Vanderbilt, USC, UCLA, UCSB, & U of M
(*Note: I realize all of these are a reach for me, I have a lot of safe schools but this is my dream schools)

School: Public
Location: Michigan
GPA Unweighted: 4.0
Major: Prelaw
(I have an upward trend, I worked extremely hard junior year to achieve excellent grades, I used to be a slacker freshmen/some of sophmore year)
SAT: 1140 (new sat) I realize this is extremely low, I do SAT prep daily and have been working extremely hard w/ a tutor to improve my score, I’m hoping my score will be a 1350 ish
SAT subject Test: Haven’t taken yet, but I’m taking Literature and hoping for at least a 700

EC: Not a whole lot here.
NHS, NSHSS, Latin Club, Quiz Bowl, Comedy Club, Young Americans For Freedom, TED Talk & Ted x Cordinator

Awards:
Honor Roll
AP scholar

Essay: Essay is extremely strong about dealing with my mom getting stabbed by a man in Detroit and how that experience prompted me to have the desire to become a lawyer

Letter of Recs: Really strong about my love for learning and one from my math teacher who I had freshmen year & junior year and speaks towards my improvement and my dedication to excell at school

oh and I work 20 hours a week as an assistant manager at a retail store

Try to get more awards in there and really push for that higher SAT score.

?

How is your course rigor? An unweighted 4.0 with a rigorous courseload is much more significant than a 4.0 with no APs. I wouldn’t worry too much about awards, but try and get some leadership positions in clubs you care about, and definitely raise that SAT score.

Oh I just realized I forgot to include my courses! I took 4 honors classes, and 8 AP classes (including senior year)

Sorry, but your SAT score is too low for the UC’s and USC.
Can you afford the UC’s? The UC’s do not give any kind of money/financial aid to OOS students. The UC’s are public universities funded by the State of California, so if you are not a resident, the cost is $55K per year, minimum. Sorry :frowning:

Pre-law is not a major at UofM (and rightfully so). You can go into law from almost any major. Also, as @“aunt bea” mentioned, I do not think UCs provide ou-of-state financial aid anymore (or are in the process of phasing out the miniscule aid that they do currently offer).

For Michigan:

Try to bring up your SAT score. How can you have an “upward trend” in grades and still have a 4.0 GPA? A 4.0 indicated a perfect All-As record. Your ECs seem fine for an in-state applicant (the Assistant Manager thing could be a sizable plus, especially since you work 20 hours a week and performed well enough to be promoted).

I would like to know my chances for Cal Poly SLO…
Also these are my stats at the end of Junior year.

Major: BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
New SAT: 1150 (The scores for June have not come out yet, so my score may go up)
ACT: 23 (didn’t like the format or timing of this specific test)
Calculated GPA FOR CSU: 4.27
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.524
Ranking in Class: 9/274
Semesters of math/highest: 6 (Honors Pre-Calc)
Semesters of Lab Science: 6 (Biology, Chemistry, Honors Biotechnology)
Semester of English: 6 (1 pre AP and 1 AP)
Semesters of Foreign Language: 4
Semesters of Visual Performing Arts: 0
leadership: yes (ASB)
Hours of work per week: (10-12 in summer)
work was major related: for the most part no, but i have done work for my dad and family in the agricultural buisness
ECs: ranging from 6 to 16 hours per week

California Vet: no
Partner School: no
… : no
… : no
… : no
… : no

The classes I will be taking my senior year are:
AP Lit and Comp
AP Physics
AP Economics
AP Calculus
Ceramics (will fill in my visual arts)
ASB

Also if any of you think I should apply for the early decision because of my stats that would be great or your opinion of what needs to be improved. However I’m not sure when aerly decision has to be submitted, so would taking the SAT again in October be safe for that? Also is it still true that slo perfers the ACT over the SAT. If so should i focus more on the ACT? Because I have only taken it once and got a low 23.

Anyway what are my chances and your opinions? ")

You should get that SAT up to 1300+ to become a match at Michigan – easier than UCLA OOS and the privates since it is your state flagship – but for right now, I strongly recommend adding matches and a safety.

Potential matches:
Kalamazoo College
Beloit College
Lawrence University
Earlham College
Michigan State

In-state Safeties:
WMU
EMU
CMU

ok thanks @10s4life. Also I just started a thread if you wanted to talk more there because I have more questions to ask, but like you said don’t want to do it on someone elses thread… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1905760-cal-poly-slo-chances-and-your-opinions.html?new=1

@Jacobjello58 Make your own thread bro LOL.

To OP: Is that 4.0 only your Junior year? Seeing that you’re saying you had an upward trend and that you were a slacker as a Fresh and Soph, what is your cumulative GPA?

GPA is ok especially if there is an upward trend. SAT is not in range of these schools. I would say you have the best chance at UofM because stats are most similar and because you are instate. Any leadership roles in EC? Also I would have a bunch of people read your essay for editng if you are counting on it to carry you through at these reach schools

@RiceFarmer my cumlative weighted GPA is 4.297, my cumulative unweighted GPA is 4.0 and my weighted GPA 10-12 is 4.524. I have gotten all A’s so far and took 5 APs/Honors my Junior Year. And yes I did make my own thread after these posts.

Oh lol, I was going to say I was somewhat confused.

@Jacobjello58 - Make sure your first semester of ceramics covers A-G, sometimes 1st semester art courses are not college prep (in other words, talk to your counselor about needing 2 semesters VA for Cal Poly).

@1andonly Ok thanks, I never thought about that, but I will be sure to do that.

Upward trend with a 4.0?
