Thank Y’all so Much!
@Gumbymom Do you help chance other colleges besides UC’s? Do you know who might be able to help? Thanks!
Here is a link to the Purdue Data Digest: https://www.purdue.edu/datadigest/. If you click on the links for “Student Enrollment” and “Applications, Admits, and Matriculations” you might be able to glean some information that will allow you to compare your statistics to those of recently admitted students similar to you.
@gandalf78 The link didn’t work
@gandalf78 Because I was born in Indiana, would Purdue be in state for me even though I moved states? I lived in Indiana for 9 years.
Unfortunately my forte is UC’s and Cal states. Sorry I cannot help but @CADREAMIN is Forum Champion for USC and @yikesyikesyikes might have some knowledge on Michigan Tech.
@Gumbymom Thank you so much! I’m curious though if you know of any california community colleges that I could possibly attend to take courses in CS that could transfer to USC or a UC? Can you transfer OOS to UC’s? For instance, is a UW Madison CS to UCSC/UCB CS transfer possible? Thanks!
Yes, it is possible to transfer from an a OOS college to the UC’s however, OOS transfers have low priority for admission. The hierarchy for UC transfers is as follows: California CC > UC to UC > Cal state to UC> CA private to UC > OOS to UC.
The main issue is articulating OOS courses to the UC transfer requirements. Transfers in California can use the following website to help plan their transfer courses: assist.org. What you would have to do is look on assist.org to find the required transfer courses and then try to match them to the OOS university courses.
Also, why not apply directly to the UC’s as a Freshman unless costs are a limiting factor? As a transfer, you will still have to pay OOS fees for at least 2 years at the UC’s so that still is around $120K.
@Gumbymom Ah, okay. What about residential Community colleges in CA like Shasta College? Is it expensive and would I earn CA Residency living there and studying?
If you come to California specifically for educational purposes, you will be considered OOS for the time you remain in California unless you can show proof of financial independence from your parents.

Here is the link for cost of attendance as an OOS student at Shasta College.
https://www.shastacollege.edu/cost-financial-aid/cost-of-attendance/
It is almost the same price as an in-state student at the UC’s. Also if you plan to transfer as a CS major, you want to find a community college that offers the majority of CS transfer required courses. It is not unheard of for CC students to attend a couple of different CC’s to complete all their CS transfer courses since each UC may have different and specific courses required for the transfer.
@Gumbymom So, If I attend like Santa Barbara Community college for some courses and MATC in Milwaukee for other courses, I could “Build” the ideal Lower Division transfer plan?
Yes, it is possible but you would need to coordinate with your CC transfer advisors.
Is affordability the issue in applying to the UC’s as a Freshman admit? Again, you will not gain California residency unless you follow the guidelines I linked.
@Gumbymom Yeah, it is. I can’t afford the UC’s but am highly interested in attending one. Madison is still good and I hope I have a shot at attending there but IDK. USC is my Dream School for CS and IDK if I’ll get accepted to the point that I could afford it without transferring. I’m considering a Madison to USC transfer or a OOS CC/residential CA CC transfer to there.
What is wrong with UW Madison? Great CS program, in-state with lower debt. You can always come to California for summer internships and jobs (post grad). Our UC’s are wonderful schools for in-state students, but I would never pay $65K/year to attend as a CS major. A CS degree is extremely marketable so you would have no problem finding a good job going to UW Madison.

@Gumbymom There’s nothing wrong with UW Madison. I’d just prefer Berkeley or USC. They just seen appealing to me.
@Gumbymom That’s great advice though. I’m now curious about my chances for Madison. I guess reading what you wrote made Madison sound way more appealing thanks to the cost being cheaper. Thank you so much! Is there anyone that can help me with my chances to UW Madison?
Go to the Purdue website, and search for “data digest”; it should come up.
There is probably a link on the Purdue website that describes how applicants are classified as in-state (or not) for tuition purposes; so I would search for residency classifications, or something along those lines. Because you are currently not a resident of Indiana – and most states require residence for a certain period of time prior to application – you likely would not be classified as an in-state applicant. But check the written residency requirements, or call the admissions office about it.
I am only familiar with Michigan Tech through some friends who have/had family there, but your stats seem aligned at first glance. I am curious though, how did it make it to your list?
