I attend a poor white rural school that mainly focuses on sports

Extra Curricular:
Science Olympiad for the past 6 years with a few state championships.
Martial Arts for the past 9 years, I hold a black belt rank.
Quiz bowl for a year
Academic Decathlon for a year
I’ve done some construction volunteer work and also taught martial arts to kids for a few years for volunteer work…

Work:
I work on a farm along with more recently an engineering company doing simple measuring and draft work.

My mother is an immigrant to the United States and English is not the only language spoken at home.

I would like the potentially major in Electrical Engineering in CSE however if I do not get accepted I would like to potentially transfer from within the U of M TC from either CBS or CLA. Please give your thoughts on my chances from those three colleges… Thanks

Two questions here:

  • are you in-state or out?
  • Are you a first generation college attendee/URM?

As it stands, I’d say that you’re a reach for CSE & CBS, but a solid match for CLA.

That’s a great GPA, and your school culture helps some help, but the ACT score needs a boost.

1st gen or URM, and I’d put CSE & CBS at low-reach.

If you can kick that ACT score up 2 points or more, it would significantly improve your chances… and if you’ve been doing Quiz Bowl and Academic Decathlon, you should retest- I gotta believe you can pull a better result with just a little practice and study.

Good luck!

I am out of state, and not a first generation college attendee. I am taking the act one last time in september, and I have purchased material to practice with. Thanks

May want to bring your ACT up to 30+ for CBS/CSE…

I got into CBS with a 28 ACT (31E 28M 25R 29S) and a 3.5UW 4.4W. Definitely apply because you’d be surprised how good your chances are compared to what other people say.

And I was OOS

A near 4.0 should get you in to CSE. Schools today are looking less at test scores since it doesn’t really represent work ethic of 4 months. But to stay on the safe side it’s good you’re taking it again.

Even if you don’t get in to CSE you absolutely will get in to CLA, and you could easily transfer to electrical engineering since it’s not the most popular major in CSE and you won’t declare your major until the end of your sophomore year. Though there might be some classes that you might need to be in CSE to take.

@quirky294 Do you have insight into the admissions process?

I would agree with what you are saying because class rank/GPA are a better indicator of effort and desire. A higher ACT/SAT score is an indicator of retention but also test taking skills but does not measure effort.

As a manager in a big industrial firm, I have always preferred people with above average intelligence (i.e. good test score) with a high level of completion/implementation of projects (GPA) that require diligence/drive.

Thanks, so assuming I don’t get into cse and go to cla would I be allowed to take the certain classes for a first year going into the ee program such as intro to electronics in the cse buildings? Thanks again

@khidhala @Catria are correct. The 27 ACT is low for CSE but a solid match for CLA. See link below:

Your class rank is borderline for CES (almost at 25th percentile) but a solid match for CES. Is your school ridiculously difficult with a lot of brainy students? How do you have an almost perfect UW GPA and still only in top 10%? See link below:

@MitchIsTheMan97 What year did you matriculate? ACT score for 2014 25th percentile for CBS was 28. You would have been in the middle 50%.

UMN uses class rank as an indicator. What was your class rank with the GPAs you stated above?

My class rank is about 6 percent at the moment. Because my school is relatively small the top people managed to sneak into the top by tsking the easy way out. My school is also not difficult. I am number 3 out of 58ish I believe

@Lucker your class rank would be good for CSE (see links above in previous post). Your ACT is slightly low for CSE. If you could raise your score 2-3 points on composite, you would have a chance of getting directly into CSE.

I’m taking the act one last time in september in the hopes of that thanks

@CyclonesGrad @khidhala I retook the ACT and got a 30 this time: E28,M30,R29,S33, Chances?

I think you have a pretty good chance of getting into CSE. Your ACT is in the middle 50% and your class rank is definitely in the middle 50%.

Excellent effort! Congrats!

Congratulations @Lucker for bringing up the Math and Science subscores as well, especially if you are applying to CSE.

At this point I’d put you at a solid match for CBS at the very least. Are you planning to apply to CSE with CBS as your backup?

Finally did you mention whether you are male for female? CSE female% is on the low side and the reverse is true for CBS. If gender is a factor in the admission decision, you have an advantage for at least one of those colleges

@Mamelot I think ill put CSE as primary with CBS as backup now, and i’m male so no advantage for me :stuck_out_tongue: and thats

Congratulations!! Definitely a solid match. Just shy of a lock, but if I were you, I’d be buying maroon and gold sweatshirts!! Ski-U-Mah!
