My school doesn't have grades...so I can't really give you that stat. BUT I will say that it would (hopefully) convert to a 4.0 unweighted. My reports are written in narrative form and have always been complimentary and very good.

Junior classes: Cognitive Science, Chemistry, Physics of Waves, Spanish Seminar, Topics in American Literature, Politics of Race and Gender in American History, Advanced Topics in Music Theory, Analytic Geometry, Differential Calculus, Writing Intensive Thesis Lab

Senior classes: Intro to Quantum and Relativistic Theory, Human Biology, Guys & Dolls pit band(Assistant Musical Director and Bass), Advanced Topics in British Literature, Advanced Topics in Modern European History, Integral Calculus, Advanced Topics in Calculus, Multidimensional Analysis.

Also did an independent study that was a comparison of systems of American education through digital photography in 10th grade.

In addition to senior classes, I'm also taking Basic Chinese pt I through Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth (A average, my first grade!)

In school activities: Literary Magazine (co-editor), Yearbook(principle photographer), Rock & Roll Club(founder and bandleader), Scrabble Club, Jazz/Instrumental Ensemble(bandleader, guitar), Competitive Math Team(inaugural member), Photography Club, Old Time Music Group.

Other ECs - NYSSMA Jazz Evaluation Festival, Level 1 - 28/28, Level 4 - 26/28, All State - 97/100, Young Musicians Healing Haiti(see below for description), internship with Chief of Surgery at local hospital (spent time in his office as an assistant surgical technician, and time in the operating room as an observer), wrote for local newspaper as only Art & Music writer, was published probably 20 times.

Attended SPARK Program for Gifted Science Students at Brown in 7th grade, and Pre-College Program in "Putting Ideas Into Words" also at Brown in 9th grade.

Sports: Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball, Varsity Ultimate Frisbee(captain), recreational tennis & golf

Haiti thing: Since the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, I have been organizing benefit concerts for Haitian relief(duh). In March of 2010(concert 1), I raised $1500, March of 2011(concert 2), $900, and October of 2011(third and final high school concert), raised $4855, total of $7255. All of the proceeds have gone to a local organization with Vassar College called the Vassar Haiti Project. The money I donated is going to help rebuild the only music school in Haiti, Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince. I'm currently featured as a community member of the VHP, and in September of last year, I was honored by Vassar College and presented a check with the leader of the VHP to an executive member of Holy Trinity when a boys choir from the school came to do a concert at Vassar.

Sorry it's so long, but any ideas?

Roll the dice. You need to come up with double sixes. If I werer you, I’d take my game elsewhere. Lots of other nice places to play.

^ I agree, but there are some interesting things you could possibly use in your essays… and maybe your URM status will be a hook…? but I guess you’re asian too, so…

Anyways, good luck.

Absolutely no grades at your school? That puts emphasis on standardized tests–you would have a good shot at Cornell and U Penn with those scores.

Yeah, the grades at school are narrative evaluations. They’re all in paragraph form with a chart above of some categories that you are like quazi-graded in. It goes from Area of Concern(Failing), Developing(Almost there, so like a C/B depending on the category), and Proficient(at full course expectations, so A), then Distinguished(which sort of implies that you’re above and beyond the requirements of the class and are doing exceptionally well. I have seen very few “developings” on my reports. The overwhelming majority is Proficient, with some distinguished thrown into my chem, USH, wave physics, and Spanish classes from last year. We actually only added distinguished to the reports second semester last year, so that was their first test at it. I mean we obviously have scores out of 100 on exams, but that’s not averaged into anything nor does any college see that, so it’s really just an internal thing.

Hispanic, but no Natinal Hispanic Scholar? Why?

I had poor PSAT/NMSQT scores.

Too bad you can’t put up some better scores on the SATIIs. :frowning: (Did you actually prep for any of those?) How big is your HS? Is it private, or a magnet? (Sounds like an interesting place…) Do you have any idea how others with your kind of stats have done admissions-wise in recent years? Are there elite colleges that have any history with your school? Do you expect to get great recs?

It’s hard to estimate your chances, frankly. You have some excellent stuff on your resume, you may have URM status, but as you know there are definite weakness in the standardized testing realm for schools of D’s caliber. I can see an adcom really getting behind your app, but I can also see them regretfully saying no. Actually, my official bet is that you are waitlisted. :)

Where else are you applying?

My high school is 100 people, private. Our graduating class is typically between 20 and 30 people at the most, and we typically get 3 or so ivy acceptances a year. Quite frankly, I don’t think anyone has ever gotten into Dartmouth from my school hah. I mean this is just sort of an application simply for the sake of applying obviously. I have also applied ED to Brown, then RD to URochester, Colgate, NYU, GWU, BU, Harvard(also, a crapshoot lol), Wesleyan, Tufts, Haverford, Union BS/MD, and Middlebury.
