I’m a junior this year and I know it’s a bit of a reach but…

SAT: 2340
SAT II: Bio 780 Math 800
Job/Work Experience: work at a childcare center last summer and tutored elementary kids, this summer I have an internship working in the social media/marketing field of a major non-profit
EC’s: Prez of my school’s chapter of Make-A-Wish (co-founded), Public Relations officer for Habitat for Humanity, VP of Key Club, Treasurer for Interact, Peer Outreach officer, doing Indian classical dance competitively for 12 years, attending Economics for Leaders, private tutor, 250+ volunteer hours, have worked on many community projects and service projects and starting up another one this summer for my Girl Scout Gold Awards, also helped to put on a charity dinner to raise money for school district

For soph + jr year: 3 APs and 5 honors courses taken
Do you think I have a shot? And what other schools do you think i could get into?

Good job, you’re gpa is a little low but not enough to keep you out of UCD. I would think that with an Sat score like that you should be able to get into Berkeley, and all of the CSU (except for ones that have impacted majors)

Dude I had a 4.1 UC GPA a 2010 SAT was only president of one club not much other extracurriculars other than volunteering and my AP scores and SAT IIs were nothing special and I still got into Berkeley, even though I chose Davis in the end. It’s all about the essay buddy! Make it stand out! Like don’t go with the same old same old “My parents were very strict and always made me strive to be the best…” essay. I’ve read like a hundred of those personal statements. For example in my personal statement I wrote about how my upbringing fostering animals made me interested in life sciences/biology. One of the teachers at my school used to be an essay reader for Berkeley and she loved it!

Use your Senior year to boost your GPA. At the current level you shouldn’t have much difficulty getting into any of the UCs (Cal and UCLA would be above average chance). As for other schools your SAT is high enough that your GPA may be overlooked but you need to pull together a few essays that will impress schools other than the UCs.

Unfortunately, you can’t afford Senioritis :)

As for APs I really do question their value other than to demonstrate that you took the highest level of courses offered by your High School. Having attended the Orientation at UC Davis, I can tell you that many parents were very unhappy with the way the corse requirements really don’t seem to help. If you are pre-professional APs really don’t help pad up your credits.

Remember though that college admissions are really a crap shoot and don’t get fixated on any one college.

Great SAT scores. I would say you have a good chance of getting into Davis. What might be concerning is your GPA. I know of a classmate who was declined admission because of his GPA. It really depends on how the dean of admissions decide to admit students this year. Also, I would like to point out that if you’re interested in UCSD, don’t be discouraged if you get rejected from Davis. I know of two people from my school who got rejected from Davis but accepted into SD. Personally I prefer Davis because of the atmosphere =P
