What are my chances for the following Schools?

  1. University Of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
  2. University of Wisconsin - Madison
  3. Georgia Institute of Technology
  4. University of Texas – Austin
  5. University of Maryland – College park
  6. Purdue University – West Lafayette
  7. University Of Michigan - Ann Arbor
  8. University of Illinois – Chicago
  9. Iowa State University
  10. Indiana University – Bloomington
  11. Iowa University
  12. Pennsylvania State University – University Park (Penn State)
  13. Ohio State University
  14. University Of Minnesota - Twin Cities

Are any of those your home state?

What’s your budget? Are you able to pay $50-60k/year for OOS tuition?

What are your safety schools? None on your list are guaranteed for CS. A few are very likely but not guaranteed.

The OP is from Illinois.

Unfortunately, with an unweighted GPA of 3.5, for CS, UIUC, GTech, UT Austin, UMD, Purdue, U Michigan, Wisconsin, and U Minnesota are all out of reach.

Your GPA is to low to be considered for direct admission to CS at Indiana University (minimum 3.75). For general admissions, it would be a reach.

Penn State - University Park is a reach
OSU Engineering is a reach

UIC would be a match or a reach.

For Iowa and Iowa State, you would have to have an RAI score above 255. First-Year Admission Requirements
Based on you SAT, GPA, and what you write about your classes, both could be safeties, but calculate your RAI.

The GPA doesn’t seem to be consistent with the SAT score. The colleges listed are mostly reaches for CS because of your GPA. All the ECs in the world wont matter if the GPA is not competitive. There are plenty of applicants with high scores, gpa and great Ecs who get rejected from CS at those schools.

In addition to what was already mentioned, add University of Kansas and Kansas State as possible backups. Good news is that a CS degree from a respectable department plus your own self directed projects in college will land you opportunities.

Agree Iowa and Iowa State would be safeties, if also affordable. OP must meet the RAI index and other admission requirements:

Seconding Kansas and Kansas State. You might also consider DePaul, University of Dayton, and Michigan State.

Are you female? Can you afford full tuition? Those things would up your chances a little bit (but not make up for your GPA).

SMU would work. Not sure how much merit would come. Decent APs with the 3.5. They superscore and 1470 is very good.

Second Iowa, Iowa State and add Missouri. Arizona schools? UIC worth a solid look.

Is your father applying too?

If you noted that you worked with your father, who has been in the field for 20+years, the colleges will wonder why you listed his experience and not yours. They’re not admitting him, correct?

Did you actually coach a team or did you just teach a couple of skills?

Your ECs seem to defer to others and not so much to you.

A 5 hour stint will stand out since it appears to be an afterthought. There are lots of students and Scouts that have spent hundreds, if not thousands of hours in volunteering activities in food banks, homeless shelters and community service activities.

You have a list of public universities which are obligated first to their instate residents and will charge you those hefty nonresident fees.

CS is a very tough major and they tend to choose via GPA, rigor and rank. Apply, but your best bets will be your instate schools.
