grades: my GPA is 89.8, but this is not communicated directly to colleges. our school simply sends the transcript (without the GPA) so that colleges can focus on the courses we took and the grades we received in them rather than on one number. GPAs at my school are unweighted.

test scores: 34 on the ACT. never took the SAT. 790 on u.s. history subject test...took the spanish subject test TODAY and will send if i receive a good score.

recs: i'm getting one from the headmaster of my school! (who was also my u.s. history teacher). and one from my ap spanish lit teacher...both recs should be top-notch.

sooooo what are my chances?!?!

BUMPPPP
if you chance me I WILL CHANCE BACK

I’d say with an ACT clearly above average and all your AP’s and other high test scores, your a shoe in. If you can’t get in i probably can’t! The GPA thing might be a little sketchy though.
Chance me back!

Wait, but your applying to all those schools for early decision?? Cant you only apply to one for early decision or it nullifies the contract?

Id say georgetown and duke are high reaches, northwestern and vandy are low reaches/high match and the rest youll get in.
I would say look at your school history with those schools though if you want a better answer

@ destroyer, i’m only applying to one school ED (duke). it’s fine to applyto other schools with non single-choice non-binding early action.

In my opinion, you are a very strong candidate for all the institutes you mentioned. Write back, once the admission process is over:)

thanks to everyone who has chanced me so far!
BUMP. if you have a chances thread too mention it so i can be sure to chance you back!

You don’t really have a choice with the Spanish Subject Test…you have to send Duke 2 Subject Test scores so hope for the best with the Spanish or you’re screwed.

I think your ACT really helps…but your GPA (there’s no way your school can refuse to show universities your GPA/class rank as that’s the only way they’ll know how well you do at challenging yourself…otherwise, everyone at your school can take AP classes without the pressure of doing well) is not good. Also, your ECs are pretty subpar…there’s no passion/dedicated leadership from what I can see.

If you have a stereotypical Bengali name, then there’s really no advantage in not putting down your race. The adcom can decipher your heritage if your name is “Dhrumi Patel” (I know this is Gujurati, just an example lol) or something, so I’d just go ahead and put Asian down.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1004999-duke-ed-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

you have some misinformation. if you send the ACT with writing you DON’T have to send subject test scores. and i know it may be hard to believe but my school really DOES send the transcript without the GPA. they’ve done this for years and kids have gotten into amazing schools (including duke)

you made commeents but you didn’t actually chance me? haha

Duke ED - low reach
UMich EA - in
UNC-CH EA - low reach, out of state is harder to get in
Notre Dame probably EA - match
Emory - low reach
Vandy - low reach
Wash U - low reach
Tufts - low reach
Northwestern - reach
Georgetown - low reach
Tulane probably EA - match
Wisconsin-Madison - in
Penn State - in

you probably should get into the schools that i said were low reach, it’s just that your ec’s are weak. do you have any idea how your gpa compares in your school? it seems low to me but i’m unfamiliar with your school’s system. good luck!

massgirl - forget chancing, no one on here can really tell you anything that is useful with regard to that. The real question you are asking, I hope, is “Is my list a good one as far as matching my credentials with schools?” Academically the answer is yes, you have a nice list with some variety and so as long as you would really be happy going to those schools you should be fine. But 4 years at a place is more than academics, albeit that is the main focus. You need to also answer the following qustions regarding your preferences:

1) Size of school, undergrads (0-2,500; 2,501-10,000; 10,001-20,000; 20,000+)
2) Location (Highly urban, suburban, rural)
3) Geography (are there parts of the country you prefer or some you will not consider)
4) Weather (prefer warm, snow…?)
5) Sports (looking for competitve Div. 1, don’t care…?)
6) Greek scene (thinking about joining, want to avoid even a whiff of it, or in between)
7) If female, are single sex schools an option?
8) Anything else that you might think is important to you personally (you ride horses, like rock climbing, active arts scene, whatever).
9) Not really about atmosphere, but very important. Will you need Finanacial Aid? Are you hoping for merit scholarships?

These are not trivial issues. There are lots of choices where the academics are outstanding. There is no reason to be trudging through snow if you are a sun worshipper, for example. Answer these questions (and certainly some might not be important to you at all), and then it will be easier to focus the possibilities.

duke/gtown are mid-high reaches
ecs will hurt because there seems to be no real commitment and nearly no leadership
gpa also might hurt a tad bit regardless of the fact that its unweighted. these top schools expect their applicants to getting nearly all A’s in honors/APs
That being said, i think its you have to send either a SAT and Subject Tests, SAT and ACT(to replace subject tests), or ACT(To replace SAT) and Subject Tests

i think you’re competitive for duke, and for the rest of the schools as well. the only thing is, unc ch might be a reach because of out of state status…you have good numbers though!..and no way! im bangali too  chance me?

and do you have any major awards, honors?
