Hooks (interesting and very unique things)

The Roskamp Institute (research laboratory)[26 Jun 11-present]
Internship at a world renowned research laboratory which focuses on Alzheimer's research. I work in the genomics lab and pretty much do all the lab procedures (PCR, electrophoresis, dilutions, electroporation, quantification etc)

The Trevor Project (suicide lifeline) [Sep 2010 – present]

The Trevor Project is an LGBT suicide lifeline, and I am on their youth advisory board (YAC). The YAC is a program of the Trevor Project comprised of 18 young people ages 16-24, (to convene monthly via conference call) that will advise the organization on outreach and programmatic efforts targeted at LGBTQ youth. Participants in the YAC will have the unique opportunity to have their voices and opinions heard and implemented into the strategies of a national organization. They also are tasked with creating programs and events to promote awareness in their communities.
Projects that I'm working on now: weekend suicide prevention summit for the tri-county area; gay straight alliance; anti-bullying teacher workshop; Trans* 101 workshops

Duke TIP Summer Institute (unique because I'm applying there...)
Genetics program at Duke for two weeks. Met professors, met admissions officers etc.
Intended Major(s)/Interests:
Biomedical Engineering, biochemistry and immunology.

Wow - I’d say you have a pretty good chance. (and even if you don’t make it, you will get in somewhere awesome! haha)

i’d say you have a great chance at duke. it’s hard for anyone to get in, but your unique activities really set you apart from other applicants. even if you don’t get into duke, i’d be surprised if you don’t get into multiple ivies or other highly selective schools. good luck! :)

Granted you’re applying ED, you have a solid chance. Your academic record is solid and you have high involvement in what you do. Not much more to say.

I think you have an extremely good shot of getting in, I’d be very surprised if you were even deferred.

Thank you all for the replies! To clear things up, I’m not posting this for an ego-boost. I have anxiety (yes, shocking) and just don’t deal well with thinking about this all the time. I just want to get some input from CCers to either clam me down, or give me a reality check.

I think you have a great shot. Your activities are interesting and unique. Your scores are in a great range for Duke.

Good Luck :)

I’d say you definitely have a high chance of getting in. Your scores are pretty high and your EC’s are unique and plentiful

Very nice!

But few things for improvement:
Although your field of interests are (Biomedical Engineering, biochemistry and immunology), I found some comparably low(?) scores on the subjects that are regarded highly in that major.
Math: 730
Math II: 760
Biology-M: 770
AP Calculus (Exam: 4)

On the other hand, your literary skills seem superior.

You’re definitely getting in. That record is spotless and pristine. Man, be proud of those!

ED will also help you greatly.

Yeah, I was worried about the scores there as well. I’m incredibly good at Biology, my school course (IB Biology HL) just didn’t cover everything on the SAT II Bio test. We never learned about stuff like the ear and never went very deeply into Animal Phyla, which is what I missed on the exam. I think my lit scores and ECs make up for that, do you?

Thank you, Systematik. What do you mean by spotless? I feel like I could have done so much more than I already am…

they are pretty darn good EC’s!
I wish I had those opportunities in Canada.

Well, The Trevor Project was like…the godsend of my college dreams. I applied on a whim, and was chosen out of a pool of about 100. It’s probably my best EC, other than the GSA I started and my lab internship. I really hope I look unique enough!

you definitely have a great shot especially since you’re applying ED

Amazing EC! I don’t even know who you are and I already like you. Your ECs do a good job of presenting you as some sort of giver.

Your test scores are good too. I’d say you have a good shot.

Competition for Duke, as it is every year, will be tough. I know several people at my school who have applied to Duke as well and according to them, applying to Duke is like a standard that almost everyone does. Then again, this is the Asian community I’m talking about.

I’m probably exaggerating, but you get the point. Your applications seems to be more competitive than any of their’s though, so rest assured.

you’ve taken a crapload of APs and extracurriculars i think you definetley have a great shot
could you chance me pwease?

You look good for Duke!

Your record is absolutely spotless. Your only problem is… well nothing! The absolute only thing I would say is find the course that is most accepted in and go for that course then do well in it and transfer into your liked course sophomore or junior year. Good Luck!

You have a fabulous record!
Consider applying for the Robertson Scholarship at Duke. I believe your ECs are in line with that award. (Note: Applications are due December 1st). If you don’t have time to apply this year and you do end up at Duke, Robertson takes a few first year students so you will have another opportunity to apply.
