Chance me for Duke, please! :)

Hello everyone,

First of all, I am from Germany. But I would love to go to college in the USA, especially to the Duke University. So I would apply as an international student.

I am not sure if my grades and extracurricular activities would be enough to apply. I have not taken any tests like the SAT or ACT yet, and in addition to that I would have to take the TOEFL test to prove that my English is good enough.

I am attending 11th grade, but we have 13 grades in Germany, so I am going to graduate from High School (private and catholic) in 2013.

I am in the USA (SD) right now, but only for one school year. I am going to return home in June and then I will be in 12th grade. I got a full scholarship by the Congress-Bundestag (the German government) Youth Exchange Program and I am considered a German ambassador.

Here are my grades from my German school:

9th GRADE (1st semester/2nd semester):

German: A+/A+
English: A+/A+
Latin: A+/A+

Work habits: A+/A+

10 GRADE (1st semester/2nd semester):

Political Science in English: A/A+

Music Appreciation: A+/A+

Work habits: A+/A+
Motivation: A+/A+

Social Behavior: A/A+

My grades from the first quarter here in SD:

South Dakota History: A
Music Appreciation: A+
American History: A
Honors Geometry: A+
English II: A
Choir: A

I don't really know what counts as an extracurricular activity, so I am just going to list everything that comes to my mind:

Classical piano: 12 years
Singing lessons: 4 years
Drama club in school: 4 years
Acolyte in (catholic) church: 8 years

I am going to join the Amnesty International Youth Group in my area when I get back to Germany. I am also going to get a certificate that I have worked voluntarily more than 100 hours (during my year abroad) with a signature by President Obama. I will continue the volunteer work in Germany.

I don't have my two teacher references yet, but they are probably going to be very strong.

Of course, I am going to take either the SAT or the ACT and the TOEFL if you think that I should try to apply.

And one more question: In Germany it is possible to go abroad for a while after graduation. I would love to go to South Africa (or somewhere else) to work either in a hospital or on a farm for hurt wild animals. Would that be a disadvantage or an advantage?

Please, be honest with me, and thank you a lot for reading all this!

Svea

Do you attend a German school in Germany? If so, I think you have a good chance and should try the SAT. Getting A’s in German schools is tough. The fact that you have so many is very good.

Does your school not offer any IB/AP/Honors courses?

Yes, I attend a private German school. Is there a big difference between the SAT and the ACT? Because I might be able to take the ACT here in South Dakota.

Do you mean my school here in the USA or in Germany? Here I actually don’t really know if we have these courses, I haven’t heard IB or AP before (at least around here). My math course is Honors Geometry though.
In Germany the advanced courses begin in 12th grade, but you can only choose two.

Thank you both for your answers!

The difference in orientation of each test is debatable; different kids prefer one or the either. For the purpose of college admissions, it does not matter which you take.

Advanced Placement courses are the College Board’s versions of a uniform “honors” course. The International Baccalaureate is the titular equivalent. They are primarily used to demonstrate a student’s ability to handle a college level course and add to the academic rigor of a transcript.

Adcoms like to see that students take as many AP/IB courses as possible, but since your school[s] don’t offer them it’s a different story.

Okay, thanks a lot for your answer! So, do you think I might have a chance to get accepted?

Please, I’d really appreciate it if someone could give me an answer or some advice!

No one? :(

There is no accurate way to chance you without test scores. Your grades are certainly in the range.

By the way, there are excellent study books that help you prepare for either the ACT or SAT. Take a couple practice tests of each, and see which one you do better on. The tests have different styles, and it is not uncommon to do better on one than the other.

Okay, I will buy one of these books. Thank you for your advice!

show your SAT scores! plus, you’re international, so you have an alright-low chance.
good music ECs, but again lots of applicants have that. goodluck!
