Essay: 7/10 I’m generally a stronger STEM Student than a writer, so my essay was OK. I had my English teacher read it and she liked it, but I think it is definitely one of my weak points.

Supplemental essays for these schools are pretty good in my opinion.

Extracurriculars:
I was one of the of the original mentors for a startup mentoring company in my area, so I helped grow the company and mentored a kid for 2 years.
Lacrosse (Varsity JR/SR year, played since elementary school)
4 year Varsity Swim
VP of a one community service club at my school
Communications director of another community service club at my school
Member of LionsHeart (Community Service Group)
Self-taught Piano, Cello, and Guitar
Lacrosse Coach of Multiple Youth Teams and Referee for youth games
Basketball coach and Club player

OVERVIEW:
Strengths:
ACT Score (not so much the writing part)
AP Classes
Community Service
Sports

Weaknesses:
Writing
I don’t have any “stand-out” extracurriculars (except for the mentoring company, but even that isn’t super impressive)
I don’t add much diversity to schools (I’m a straight white male from a fairly affluent part of Connecticut)
I know of a couple other people from my school who are applying ED to Duke, two of them were class presidents

Application pla:
ED Duke
EA Georgia Tech
EA Purdue
EA Michigan
EA UVA

What do you guys think?

Where is your home state? Also, can you recalculate your GPA in 4.0 max scale?

Home state is Connecticut GPA on 4.0 is ~3.75 UW 4.0 W

Duke and UMich are reaches. Purdue is a match.

Purdue and Georgia Tech are likely.
Michigan and UVA are a match.
Duke is a low reach.

Don’t knock yourself on the ECs. Varsity Lacrosse and Swim; and VP of community service club + communications director are better than many other kids.

Duke seems to be a reach. Georgia Tech, Purdue, UVA should be likely, particularly the last two.
Michigan - too close to call.

Good luck!

uwGPA 3.75 is low for UMich. Their admission average has 3.87 in the last couple years. They consider GPA and course rigor as “most important”. Test score is just “important”. Their OOS admission rate is ~20% or below. OP is around average applicant (high ACT but below average GPA).

Michigan admits 16000
Purdue admits ~14000
Georgia Tech admits 7000
Duke admits 2300

Purdue 2017 OOS rate >40%
Michigan 2017 OOS rate 20%
Georgia Tech 2017 OOS rate 18%
Duke 2017 8%

Duke SAT > Georgia Tech SAT > Michigan SAT > Purdue

I think everything but duke is a match and maybe a low reach for duke. Best of luck, chance me back please?

For Engineering:

Duke > UMich > GTECH >> Purdue

… um 1470 is greater than 1440.

For engineering:

duke > gt > mich > purdue

Even GT’s overall average score from 2yrs ago is higher than Michigan engineering 2017 scores.

Back to the thread, OP’s chance of admission to Michigan or GT is probably a draw.

GT has many more OOS engineering slots but with a higher entry standard. His stats are great. If his essays areas great, he’ll have a great chance at both.

Don’t be fooled by the SAT score for 2016 freshmen which was at the transition with new and old SAT last year and very little students submit the new scores. Use the ACT or previous year SAT in 2400 scale only for comparison. Look at ASEE.org data for direct comparison and you will see the score mid 50 ranges for each engineering school.
GT 2016 freshmen mid 50 SAT 2000-2210 and ACT 30-34.
UMich CoE 2016 freshmen mid 50 SAT 2030-2220 and 31-34 for ACT.
Purdue is 1830-2070 and 29-33.
